CILL

The admin building was locked up tighter than I had ever seen it. It had me on edge, and everyone else I had seen seemed to feel it too. I was considering turning into my lemur to creep through the air ducts when Ms. Beartrand stopped me. “What are you doing here, and where is Valen Surfe?”

As usual, her cool tone caused my hackles to stand up. “I came here for some records I was asked to get. I haven’t seen Val since your bodyguards picked him up.”

“If you see him, you will inform me immediately.”

I inclined my head as her gaze moved to my hair and stayed there. “What did you do to your hair?”

Real emotion—disgust—colored her words and made me swallow a smile. Looking like an idiot was worth it to bother this revolting woman.

“My girlfriend asked me to color my hair.”

Her eyes sharpened on mine. “Ah. Ms. Foh Koltrast. She is a person of interest in the Surfe case. Please let her know that I wish to speak to her immediately.”

Shit!

Hoping I was keeping a straight face, I nodded. “Okay. She is in class now, but I will let her know to stop by as soon as she is out.”

I licked my lips and took a huge risk. “May I go now?”

“Yes, you may.” I could feel her eyes on my back as I scurried away. I wasn’t exactly afraid of her, but her goons were known for throwing their weight around. When I glanced over my shoulder on the way around the corner she was still watching me.

Moving as quickly as I dared, I darted through the hallways. I managed to reach the records room I needed with no more incidents.

The records Foh had taken pictures of had not been very helpful, and I was hoping the admissions records this room contained were better. I snagged Adam’s, and Val’s, for good measure, stowing them in my bag that was specifically designed to be carried in my ape form.

Quickly pulling off my clothes, I stuffed them in the bag as well before changing to the lemur. I jumped on top of a file cabinet, moved a ceiling tile, then disappeared into the ceiling, easily finding the room I wanted. It had a window that a big oak tree butted up against. I dropped into it before opening the window and swinging out into the foliage.

After climbing high into the tree, I pulled out Adam’s records and began to read. I moved on to Val’s records when I found nothing of interest in Adam’s file. The only thing different on Val’s was a handwritten note in the margin that simply read “loner”.

Rain started falling through the leaves, so I put the files away. It wouldn’t do to have them ruined by the storm. Then I swung through the trees to our dorm, where I entered through the second-floor window into the stairway. I quickly changed into human form and clothes, then I rushed up the stairs. There was something in the air today, and shit was going to hit the fan.
