Max raised a bushy eyebrow when Kirian and Janet came into the kitchen through the back door, still bickering about the outcome of the meeting.

“What’s this about?” Max interjected, putting his datapad on the breakfast bar. “It’s not like you two to argue.”

“Ask my stubborn-headed son.” Janet threw her hands up as she stalked into the laundry room with a bag of dirty scrubs. “See if you can talk some sense into him. He’s not listening to me.”

Kirian shrugged and headed to the fridge to get a Coke. “I don’t need any changes to my IEP. I have enough support at school.”

“Is that why Janet took the afternoon off work?” Max cupped a hand around his mouth and called to Janet, “I thought you were taking some time for yourself for once?”

“That would be a fine thing!” she shot back.

Kirian snorted. “She came to school and tried to convince Kar Togel that I need to be chaperoned between classes.”

“What? Why?” Max winced as he shifted on his stool.

“She’s being overprotective.” Kirian sat at the breakfast bar and folded his arms on the counter. “I don’t need to be babied.”

Janet stormed out of the laundry room, her face red. “Tell your grandfather why I’m doing what I can to protect you. Go ahead.”

She grasped the edge of the breakfast bar with both hands and leaned across to get between them. “Last week, your grandson was attacked by two boys. They took his chair and left him stranded in a camera blind spot. He had to get himself back to his chair by going across the quad and up the stairs. Anything could have happened.”

“But it didn’t,” Kirian countered.

“It could have!” Janet exclaimed. “Then you lied about what happened to your teachers, so excuse me if I want to make sure nothing like that happens again.”

“Everyone has to deal with the bullies. It isn’t a reason for someone to escort me between classes,” Kirian argued. “That level of assistance is for the kids who need help getting from one room to another. You got Kar Togel to agree to update the camera network to cover the blind spots. Isn’t that enough?”

Janet sighed. The dark circles under her eyes added to the overwhelming tiredness she projected. “I suppose it will have to be.” She took a glass from the cabinet and filled it with milk. “I’m going to get some sleep. Leave my dinner in the fridge, please, Dad.”

Kirian dropped his head onto his folded arms and groaned.

“She’s just worried about you, son,” Max told him. “I can’t say I blame her after hearing what those little assholes did to you.”

“Bullies are part of life, Gramps,” Kirian countered. “Me and my friends are handling it.”

Max sucked a breath over his teeth. “Kirian, I like your friends, but three Noel-nis who couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag and two Torcellan males aren’t who I’d want at my back against kids who have no problem beating up a kid in a wheelchair.
