Chapter 8 – Camilla

Awakening the next morning for school, I turned on the morning news as I began to get dressed for school. I was excited for school to be over. It wasn’t necessarily the greatest time during my life like it was for most people. Diesel and I hadn’t spoken in a few days. He was changing and becoming someone that I didn’t know.

As I ironed my clothes, I listened to the news anchor speak about the house fire and a shooting at a block party. Shaking my head, I mumbled, “Some people don’t know how to act. What a shame.” Listening to the reporter continue talking about one fatality and one severely injured during the block party shooting, I shook my head again before turning the channel to Martin. The news was so depressing that I couldn’t watch it for too long.

Once I was finished with ironing my clothes, I knew I was going to have to ask Meshach for a ride to school. Since I left my foster parents’ house, I now lived too far away to catch the school bus. Normally, Diesel would take me, but since we weren’t on speaking terms, I wasn’t about to call him and ask him for a ride. After applying my necessities and straightening my hair bone straight with a side part, I placed some gold fashionable earrings into my ears as I stared at myself in the mirror. I wore a black and white geometric sleeveless skater dress with a pair of white flip-flops. Grabbing my book bag and my purse, I placed it on the bed.

It was six-thirty in the morning when I heard the front door close. Deciding to go and see what the noise was, I opened my room door and wandered off down the stairs. Not seeing anyone in the living room, I trailed into the kitchen. Meshach was standing in front of the refrigerator getting something to drink.

“Long night?” I said as he twirled around with a scowl on his face. He hated when people snuck up on him but I found it funny and lightly giggled.

“You was about to catch some hot lead in yo ass, girl,” he said shaking his head.

“You wasn’t about to do nothing,” I said grabbing a banana out of the fruit bowl, peeling it.

“Why you up so early?”

“School! Duh?”

“Right!”

“Um hum. The real question is why are you coming home at this hour, with the same clothes on from yesterday?”

“Correct me if I’m wrong but I could’ve sworn I was grown and single,” he said jokingly.

“You’re right! Could you give me a ride to school?”

“Sure. You ready?”

“Yeah,” I replied taking a small bite out of my banana. “Let me go and grab my things.”

“Yo.”

Walking off to my bedroom, I noticed Soraya open her bedroom door, cracking it and peering out like a crazy old woman with thirty cats. I saw the whiteness of her eyelids as she just creepily stared at me. Making a confused and annoyed face, I rolled my eyes and went about my business.
