Chapter Twelve

Shit!

The last people that John wanted to run into were Flame and Tig. He wasn’t sure whether it was surprise at seeing his former best friend and his cop boyfriend or embarrassment at being out on a date, an obvious date, with a man when Flame hadn’t even known he was gay until a few months ago or not. But the result was the same regardless when the wing he was holding slipped from between his fingers, bounced off his chest, and landed on the table next to his beer.

John glanced away from Flame and Tig and looked down at his shirt. A large blob of BBQ sauce landed squarely over the word ‘fire’ and John grabbed a napkin to mitigate the damage to one of his favorite tee shirts.

“Shit,” John muttered.

“Hi,” Simon turned to Tig and Flame while from the corner of his eye he watched John rub the napkin against the blotch on his shirt. “What’s up?” He asked the men, and sent a bit of illusion toward John’s shirt.

The stain slowly faded as if John’s rubbing with the napkin was the reason. Simon didn’t attempt to make the stain totally disappear. That would have raised too many questions about the sauce, or the napkins, because everyone knew that BBQ sauce wouldn’t come out that easily. As it was, once his illusion faded, John would see how bad the stain was again.

“Not much,” Flame replied and Simon noticed that his eyes never left John.

The spike of jealousy that slammed into Simon was unexpected and almost made him growl. Never in his life had he growled.

“We’re heading to Splitsville for drinks and games.” Tig smiled. It was obvious that Tig was the more social of the two but Simon couldn’t help but wonder if that had something to do with John and Flame’s past.

John’s head raised and he looked at Flame and Tig before he set the napkin on the table. Flame seemed to be staring into him, but even after all the years they had been best friends, John couldn’t read the man’s expression.

“Looks like you got most of it out,” Flame commented on John’s shirt. “I know it’s one of your favorites.”

John glanced down at his chest again and was surprised that he could barely see the stain he had been diligently scrubbing just a moment before.

“Yeah,” John replied to Flame at the same time Simon spoke.

“Sounds like fun.”

“You should join us,” Flame blurted before he realized what he had said.

Simon’s feeling of jealousy flared higher even though he knew he had no claim on John, yet, and no right to be jealous. Still, it wasn’t like he had any control over his feelings. Especially, it seemed, when it came to the firefighter sitting across the table from him.

“You guys have plans?” Tig asked when he saw John startle at Flame’s suggestion to join them. He didn’t miss the tightening of Simon’s jaw at the invitation either.

“We’re catching a movie,” Simon tried not to glare at Flame when he replied to Tig.
