Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Chapter 30

Riley

My mouth was drier than the Sahara desert and there was a pounding behind my eyes that suggested I’d had a really great night and way too much to drink. I rubbed my eyes, groaning. When did I start drinking? I’d been on bottled water. Had Siobhan brought me something? I couldn’t remember.

I pushed myself up onto one elbow and forced my eyes open. The bright light through the window felt like a hot poker stabbing through my head, and I hurriedly squeezed my lids closed again.

Wait! My bunk didn’t have windows. I eased my lids apart and took in the room around me. Room? Had I been so drunk I’d taken the spare bedroom? I groaned and flopped onto my back.

“Riley?” A male voice, rougher than it usually sounded, but still one I really didn’t want to hear right that moment. “Riley!” Seth repeated, impatience evident in his tone. “Open your eyes.”

“I don’t want to,” I whimpered. “And, please, stop shouting.”

“I’m not shouting.” Hands hooked beneath my arms and hauled me up into a seated position. I didn’t even try to stop him. “I’ve got some painkillers and water.”

“Why didn’t someone stop me drinking?” I whispered.

“You were drinking water.” There was a pause, and I risked opening one eye a little. Seth was standing at the side of the bed, looking ridiculously sexy in a black t-shirt and jeans, a glass of water in one hand and two little white pills in the other. “Someone spiked the bottle.”

“Wh-what?” I winced at the sound of my own voice.

The hand holding the pills moved closer. “Come on, Riley, I don’t have all day. Take the damn pills.”

“You have a lousy bedside manner,” I grumbled quietly, snatching the painkillers, then the water, and swallowed them down.

“And you have a lousy instinct for self-preservation,” he retorted.

I rubbed my head. I couldn’t remember anything after leaving the dance floor. No ... wait, I was talking to someone … a guy.

“I kept hold of the bottle I was drinking. How could it get spiked?”

Seth snorted. “He knocked it out of your hand and dropped the powder in when he passed it back to you. Oldest trick in the book.”

I felt nausea rise and pressed my fingers to my lips. “Did I … did he … Seth, I don’t remember!”

He must have heard the fear in my voice because he sighed and sank onto the mattress beside me. “You’re fine,” his voice softened, and he reached out to brush a lock of hair away from my cheek. “We got to you before he took you out of the club.”

“We?”

“Me and Carter.”

“But how did you know?”

Seth shrugged. “I saw him do it.” He took the glass from me and stood back up. “We’re driving to South Carolina today, so there’s no need for you to rush and get up. Take the day, use the room. Relax, sleep it off.” He walked toward the door.

“Seth?”

He stopped.

“My camera?”

“Siobhan brought it back. It’s on your bunk.
