Chapter 5

I panicked at first, but as I ran from room to room, I figured he must have gone to McDonalds or some other store. I went to the bathroom and peed, checking my face in the mirror. I looked happy. In fact I don't think I'd ever looked happier.

The half-used soap from the day before was gone from the soap dish. I looked in the cupboard and knelt, trying to decide with shape of soap I wanted to use this morning. I picked a soap leaf and turned on the faucet. I began to lather, then I heard a knock at the door.

I stuck the soap leaf on top of the medicine cabinet, rinsed my fingers and dried off. The knocking continued. I didn't want to walk naked to the door, so I grabbed my underpants and trousers from the night before. My groin area felt sticky but I didn't care. I walked to the door quietly.

Fuck me.

Whoever was on the other side of the peephole had stuck their finger over it again.

It totally creeped me out.

I backed away slowly. What the hell was going on? I returned to the bathroom, wanting to take a shower. I couldn't wait for Joaquin. I wanted to smell nice and fresh for him. Dropping my trousers, I opened the shower door and turned on the taps.

It wasn't nearly as much fun alone as it had been with him, but I found a bar of soap in the tray holder and washed myself quickly. I had the weirdest feeling of not being alone. Of being watched.

Suddenly the shower door flew open and I screamed.

"What the hell?" Joaquin reached in and pulled me out. "What's the matter with you?"

I twitched with fear in his arms, my teeth chattering as I tried to explain. He turned off the taps and grabbed a towel from the rack. Its warmth infused me with some calm, as did his soothing words.

"You're saying this happened yesterday, too? Somebody knocked when I was gone, then put his finger over the peephole? Why didn't you say something?"

"I felt stupid."

He dried me off aggressively. "Don't answer the door when I'm not here."

"I haven't."

"Even if you recognize the person, or think you know them, promise me."

"I promise you."

He seemed very upset now. He'd dropped his grocery bag on the floor. A carton of ice cream and some cornflakes had tumbled out.

"What's going on, Joaquin?"

He shook his head. "Just a stupid...game." He tugged at his hair in frustration. "Just promise me, don't trust anybody."

"Anybody?"

"Your friend Holt is fine." He gave me a small smile. "And I am fine, too." He grinned for real then, capturing me in his arms once again and giving me a kiss. "Can you stay for breakfast?"

"Sure, I'd love that."

"This is your toothbrush," he said, picking up the grocery bag and taking out the package. "It's blue. Matches your eyes."

We walked into the kitchen. The sun streamed into the room. "You mind if I check in on Holt?" I asked.

He began preparing coffee, quirking a brow at me.
