At the horrendous hour of four in the morning, Lucy knelt in front of her mirror. She was dressed in an oversized basil-green sweater and a pair of high-waisted black jeans and even brushed her hair into a neat ponytail. Heavy bags hung under her eyes, skewed by the unevenness of the glass. Her bed called her name, but she had to try to reach Margot when they were least likely to be caught.

Her stomach clenched with nervous jitters as she drew the symbol to eavesdrop. As long as there was a reflective surface near Margot, it would work.

“Margot Lively,” she whispered.

The symbol brightened and as it faded, Lucy stared into a poorly lit room. Barren, except for a bed and whatever lay underneath the mirror she looked through. The image was grainy, static running through it like the old TV her grandfather had as if something blocked the reception.

A rustle of blankets sent her back onto her haunches. A foot poked out over the edge of the bed. She couldn’t see who it belonged to, but there was only one way to find out and she figured she didn’t have a lot of time to waste.

Lucy drew a different symbol, allowing the portal to act as a window, and whispered, “Margot?” She held her breath as the silence built around her. “Margot?” she said, again, this time louder.

The foot jerked. A hoarse cry bubbled out of the woman, “Please . . . no more. Just go away. Let me sleep.”

“Margot, it’s me, Lucy.” She wanted to jump through the mirror, to rush to her and let her know a friend was nearby. But she forced herself to stay. The mirror on the other side wasn’t big enough for a human to fit through anyway.

“Lucy?” Margot tried to sit up, but the blanket fell away, exposing a leather restraint around her ankle.

Lucy's heart sank. They were treating her like a damn criminal. “Yes, it’s me.”

“Where are you? I didn’t hear you come in.”

Lucy chewed on her bottom lip in hesitation. “I’m not in the room, Margot. I’m in the mirror.”

The bed shook as Margot's cries filled the air. “No! No more mirrors!”

She ran a hand over her face, unable to imagine what Margot had endured beyond the removal of her eyes. “Margot, it’s the only way for me to talk to you. I promised I’d help, do you remember that?”

Margot's cries lessened and she whimpered, “Yes.”

“I want to keep my promise, but I’m going to need your help.” She didn’t want to put her through any more torment, but she hadn’t a clue where to even begin.

“What can I do?” Margot asked.

“I need to know what you remember from your attack.”

Margot’s anguish spilled out in cries that choked her, sending her into a fit of coughs.

Lucy knew it was only a matter of time before the noise roused suspicion. “Margot, please. I am your friend. I just need to know where you were going the day you were kidnapped.”

The distress in her voice chopped her sentence, “I .
