Totally Unfair
The warmth made all the difference in the world. Don't get me wrong, I was still bloody freezing, so cold my teeth chattered, but I knew it wouldn't kill us. Vicky fared a little better, wrapped tight around me, although she kept complaining about her bottom being cold, bless her.
I plodded on, her hanging from my neck like a baby monkey yet to learn the skills necessary for tree climbing, me attempting, and failing, to drown out the incessant chatter. Damn but that girl could talk. To pass the time, I went over in detail everything that had happened, leaving nothing out. She interrupted repeatedly but I got there in the end, ensuring she knew as much as me. Not that it helped, she had no deep insight into the issue, just more questions.
How was Nathan alive? Was he really the true head of Cerberus? Why did he think killing so many was a good idea? Was he insane? How was he so good at magic? Had his brother known he faked his own death?
I had no answers, disbelieved it myself, and yet he was alive, and had done this to us. Again, I wondered why he hadn't just killed me. Why this subterfuge? And again I could only think of one reason. He wanted me alive so there was someone to deal with he knew. But if that was the case what the fuck were we doing here? He'd certainly tried to kill me this time, hadn't he? He blew that fake office up. Maybe he figured I'd outstayed my usefulness, was no longer worth the risk. Maybe he thought I'd survive but would be kept out of the way for a good while. Well, he got that right. I would be absent for the longest time. How did we get home from here? Where was here? Only one way to find out.
Eventually, the going became easier as snow became compact, more like ice with a thin layer over the top. Just enough to provide a grip of sorts for my less than adequate boots. As if reading my mind, the fake sun lowered until it was close to my feet. I felt the difference immediately. My frozen toes thawed and stung, such a joyous sensation, and once my feet were if not toasty then at least warm, Wand and Betty rose and circled around us, moving up and down until I actually began to sweat.
I laughed, and Vicky joined in, as it was ridiculous. Sweating in the middle of a frozen wasteland. What a joke. Nightmare, more like. Rejuvenated by the heat that was already fading as the sun moved away to a safer distance that ensured neither of the spinning loons accidentally chopped something important off me or Vicky, I redoubled my efforts and picked up speed on the thankfully level ground.
Able to think a little more clearly now I wasn't frozen half solid, I began to worry about falling through the ice or slipping and breaking a hip.
