Chapter 6 - A Period of Reflection
As the door to Shallara's apartment edged open, Tim felt as if his heart had stopped beating. The self-assured executive that had stood at this door just a couple of weeks ago had been transformed into someone who was nervous and needed reassuring. His hands were clammy and he felt short of breath. His bowels felt as if they were turning to water.
Shallara's smile seemed to melt him. She seemed almost compassionate as she reached out and took his hand. "Come in, Tim, let's go through to the sitting room."
Once again, she was elegantly dressed. A rust-colored summer frock seemed to trace out the curves on her slight body, and set off her short blond hair. Her tanned, slender calves seemed to flow down into delicate feet that ended in eye-catching red-painted toe-nails. High-heeled sandals, strappy and fire-engine red, made her seem taller than she really was, and they seemed to float across the deep-piled, cream carpet as she led the way into the living area.
He was relieved to see that Ariella wasn't in the apartment; simply recalling the embarrassment of his previous two encounters with her made him burn with shame. Shallara led him back to the couch in front of the fireplace and sat him down. As if in a dream, he watched her as she elegantly picked up that distinctive bottle of Laphroaig Islay whisky, and splashed a measure of it into the crystal glass. As she handed it to him, the light sparkled off the cut glass, glowing golden from within.
The peaty aroma from the scotch seemed to mingle with the smoke from the hearth. Just a sip of it and he seemed to find himself drifting into a relaxed state. He sensed Shallara standing behind him, and the tension melted away as she gently massaged his shoulders. The haunting tones of Enya's Orinocco Flow seemed to drag him down deeper and deeper into a comfortable trance. He could hear the word 'Mysteria' being whispered over and over again in Shallara's silky voice. It seemed to originate from right within his head, and it was pleasantly re-assuring.
And then he realized that he had entered another world completely. It was comfortingly familiar, and as he looked around, he noticed the sensuous ladies in sun-frocks gliding along the paths in a lush garden. The soft sunlight filtered through the trees, casting the garden in a radiant, golden glow. Totally at peace with life, he felt overcome with a feeling of well-being and total relaxation. The gentle rubbing on his knotted shoulders had stopped, and he felt Shallara's presence on the couch next to him.
"Welcome to Mysteria, Tim. I believe Ariella brought you down here last week. Nod your head if you recall this state." Her voice was husky and sensuous, and her perfume seemed to fill his senses. Her presence seemed to have entered his very core, and he desperately wanted to be one with her. In his drowsy state he gave an almost imperceptible nod.
