In the following analysis I identify fourteen segments in the developing action of the last scene. The scene divides itself into two parts. The first part, which occupies two-thirds of the action, ends when the Duke is revealed beneath the Friar's hood (351). In the whole scene there are seven major stages in segments of varying length devoted to public confrontations, demands for justice, surprise revelations and pleas for mercy. Interspersed are shorter interludes which are devoted to the more mechanical needs of the plot or to more private discussions which stem from or have a bearing on the surprising public revelations. Thus the scene mirrors in little the pattern of the play as a whole which alternates major confrontations of character with the Duke's secret manipulations of the plot and his various conversations with characters such as Friar Thomas, the Provost, Barnadine and Lucio. I use upper-case Roman numerals to designate the major segments where some form of revelation helps to move the characters towards a resolution of the problems which have troubled them. I use the lower-case numerals to indicate the bridging interludes. The length in lines of each segment is indicated by the number in brackets.
