FOURTEEN

Ayr patted Azura’s neck gently. “I’m always ready when you are.”

“If you say so, rider.”

As soon as the words left her lips, Azura’s body tensed, and she burst into action. With a powerful leap, she thrust herself violently into the air, causing Ayr to grip onto his saddle for dear life. Her movements were no longer graceful and controlled, but wild and erratic. The sound of her wings beating against the air was deafening, their force rocking Ayr’s eardrums. As they ascended above the walls of the Obelisk, rays of sunlight began to streak across Ayr’s face. He instinctively raised his arm to shield himself from the blinding light, but it was a futile effort against the intense brightness.

Bersos and Grithoss rose with them, their shimmering scales reflecting the sunlight like a sea of midnight blue and purple diamonds. A sense of excitement and anticipation filled the air as they soared higher and higher. Ayr wondered what the rules were now that they were airborne. Would they engage in a chase after Ayr and Azura, or would they allow them to continue their flight undisturbed? Before he could dwell on it any longer, Azura’s voice broke through his thoughts, bringing him back to the present moment.

“Rider, where do you want to go? We are safe. We can do whatever we please.”

Ayr shrugged. “I don’t know. This is your home, not mine. What can you show me?”

Azura laughed gently at him. “Yes, this is my home, but would it surprise you if I said I had not seen a lot of it with my own two eyes?”

“Because you haven’t been able to fly?”

“Yes. I am grateful that the others were able to share their experiences with me. But there are many things that I wish to experience with my own eyes.”

“Where are you going to take me then?”

“Somewhere special.”

The wind whipped through Ayr’s hair as the dragons soared high above the Obelisk. The other two riders, and their majestic beasts had disappeared from view, lost somewhere in the vast expanse of sky. Now it was just Azura and Ayr, alone in the endless blue expanse. Azura angled them towards the south, her keen eyes plotting their course away from the blinding sun. Ayr shrugged, unbothered by their movements. Could she still sense his emotions, even at this height? As they glided through the clouds, the world below looked like a miniature painting spread out beneath them.

“Are you hungry yet, Azura?”

“We will eat when we land. I can catch something there, if the others are correct.”

The saddle was a welcome barrier between himself and Azura, but Ayr found himself fidgeting in it. After spending most of his time riding Azura bareback, the added cushion was a new sensation. He knew it would be more beneficial in the future, sparing both his legs and his rear end from the strain of long rides. The leather creaked under his weight as he adjusted his position, feeling the new grooves that had formed in the short time he had been in it.
