Jordan knew he had fucked up.

“You forgot, didn’t you?” was all Robin said when he answered her call.

“I know, Robin. I’m so sorry. Time got away from me.”

“If you ended up wanting to do something else, that’s fine. I only wish you had told me.” Her tone was stiffer than her words implied she felt.

“Right, I did end up doing something else, but I wasn’t trying to avoid you, I promise.”

“Was it with the new girl?”

Jordan stilled. “What?”

“Did you end up doing something with the new girl?” Robin repeated.

Jordan stood on the sidewalk about a block away from the bar. The evening air was chillier than he had expected. He passed two men smoking and came to the end of the block where he stood at a crosswalk, waiting for the white walking man sign to blink on.

“It was, but that doesn’t matter, Robin.”

“It does,” she answered, emotion making her voice tremble. “It matters because…” She finished, “Never mind, Jordan. I have to go.”

“Wait, Robin⁠—”

She hung up. What had she been about to say? Jordan knew she had changed her mind about whatever it was.

He cursed and slid his phone into his pocket. How could he make it up to her? Surely Robin would come to understand. If she had wanted to go on a date, he wouldn’t have minded skipping D&D for her to go. What you did with Clara wasn’t a date. Then his heart sank. He wouldn’t get a real date after leaving her alone in the bar because he’d forgotten about his friend.

Jordan blew out a hard breath. Someone jostled him to cross the street. Realizing the signal had turned, he started off but not without first feeling like eyes were pinned on his back. He glanced over his shoulder but only saw an older man crossing behind him. He was on the phone and not paying an ounce of attention to Jordan.

He decided it was best he go home and sleep off the guilt. Maybe when I wake up tomorrow, my head will be screwed on right.
