CHAPTER FORTY-SIX
At the end of the tunnel, Cole spotted a grouping of warlocks, vampires, dark fae, lycans, and other assorted immortals gathered. They must have bonded over their intent to kill Lexi; it wasnât often so many different immortals were seen together and getting along well.
Theyâd defeated the Lord because so many immortals had worked with them. And these assholes were gathering an army.
His fingers popped, and his joints cracked as the lycan tried to exert its dominance, but the shadows were in control here. It was almost time for them to play.
He was almost to the group, who remained unaware of his presence, when a gate crashed down in front of him. At first, Cole was too astounded to react before another gate slammed down behind him.
The shadows rose as he realized these assholes had tried to trap him. He roared as he charged the gate protecting his enemies from him.
When he crashed into it, sparks erupted around him, and a jolt of something quaked his body and stuttered his heart. His body spasmed before the magic flung him back.
He hit the ground and bounced across it before coming to a stop. His fingers involuntarily curled inward as the incantation theyâd weaved over the gates continued to affect him.
âEasy, Cole,â Becca coaxed from behind him. âWe mean you no harm. Weâre trying to keep you alive and in power.â
Regaining control of his body, Coleâs head swiveled toward her. The second he saw her in the bar, he should have killed her, but she hadnât given him a reason to. He couldnât slaughter her without proof that she was running to the Lord.
Now, he had his proof, and she would die.
âDo you really think these bars can keep me caged?â the shadows snarled.
Becca gulped as she glanced behind him. The shuffling of feet alerted him the others were approaching the bars there.
Rocking onto his back, Cole threw his legs up and jumped into the air. He stood in the middle of the bars as his attention shifted to the other group.
âWe ensorcelled the bars,â a warlock said. âYou canât break them.â
Cole reached out to the shadows beyond the bars so they could tear these assholes to pieces, but his connection to them was gone. Frustration mounted as he realized their spell kept him from speaking with the shadows out there.
âListen to me, Cole,â Becca said. âYouâre the most powerful being in all the realmsââ
âHeâs not so powerful now,â one of the others muttered.
Coleâs eyes narrowed on the vampire, who smirked at him. âYouâll be the first one I kill,â Cole vowed.
The vampâs smile grew.
âWith your help, we can take Dragonia,â Becca continued as if no one had spoken, âand eradicate the only enemy you have.â
âLexi is not my enemy,â Cole growled.
âSheâll destroy you, and we both know it. Sheâll take you out before you can destroy the realms or her. You have to strike first; if you do, she wonât expect it.â
âHeâs not going to turn on her,â one of the warlocks said.
