Megan called Melisa immediately. “She’s having visions of the past!” Megan cried, her hands shaking. “You have to give her back her memories. They’re haunting her.”

Melisa sighed on the other end of the line. “I’m very sorry, Megan. Get her to eat as much as you can. She needs to put on weight in case,” she paused and took deep breath.

“In case she does what she did before,” Megan finished for her. “It’s so hard pretending I don’t know her, don’t love her.”

Melisa was quiet for a few moments. “Get her to eat, Megan. I’m sorry.” She ended the call.

Megan cried quietly to herself. She walked over to the window and stared out at the town. The thought of Elaina feeling betrayed by everyone she loved was just torture. Megan couldn’t stand it. But telling her the truth with her mind bent by the vampire would just confuse and upset her. Her mind would reject the truth until the vampire’s charm was undone.

Megan wiped her eyes. In five hundred years, she’d never been in a situation like this. It had just been the three of them until Maia had fallen in their hole. Ever since, things had changed. They had made friends and acquaintances. They were welcomed by shifters now. They were welcomed by vampires. Mages and wizards still seemed wary, as did a few others. But it was Elaina’s kindness and eagerness to help them that spawned their new life and she’d been but a mere adolescent at the time.

Megan owed her everything. She would protect her and pray to the God or the gods that Elaina forgive her in time.
