Chapter Thirteen

Nicholai downed his second cup of coffee, his early morning solitude lost to the excitement surrounding the artifact. Each of his hardcore warriors manifested signs of inner turmoil with individual yet specific mannerisms and excess energy. After one round of each Channon sibling’s contact with the strange artifact, all were dumbfounded with the lack of success.

Currently, the item in question rested in Dacien’s hands. “This would go a lot smoother if we had some type of manual.”

“Says the nerd who carries a slingshot in his back pocket.” Kiera elbowed her comrade in the side in passing.

“Maybe it needs to see or feel what type of power you wield. You know, to determine if you’re a match,” Casper reasoned, stroking the cheek of her pet.

The monkey chittered and laid its white face against her head. Holding his hands out toward Dacien, he flexed and extended his fingers in a gimme motion.

“No, buddy. That’s not ours to wield,” the teen cautioned. “We’re not even close to being in that league, and be thankful for it.” Casper took the monkey’s hands in her own and rubbed them gently. “We do just fine like we are. No one should mess with perfection.”

The capuchin’s response equaled a monkey-sized noogie.

“Okay. Here goes.” Dacien closed his eyes, his face losing all expression.

A blast of French invectives followed the slight arc of Dacien’s electrical talent to the relic. “Mais non. This is not for me. I may not know much, but I’d bet my life on that fact.”

“Leave it to a man to attempt brute force. It probably mistook you for a Neanderthal.” Casper shook her head and retreated when Dacien held the item out by the leather lanyard.

“You were the one who suggested showing it my power.”

“And therein lies the difference. Showing versus doing. You might have hurt it,” Casper replied with a shrug.

Dacien narrowed his gaze but didn’t reach for his slingshot.

Kiera stepped forward and held out her hand. “Here, let me give it another try. Maybe it wants a nurturing touch.” She accepted the artifact and held it close to her face. “It looks like there’s something embedded inside. See that?”

“Yeah, but it’s very faint.” Wyatt reached to touch the item, then thinking better of it, retracted his hand. “I prefer the analytics of technology. Good luck with that, hon.”

Kiera clasped the amulet between her palms and closed her eyes. “Ghost says he doesn’t like this thing. Neither does Wraith.” Bending to be eye-level with her protectors, she added, “I trust you a whole lot more than this thing, but remember, just because we don’t understand something doesn’t mean we should shun or fear it.”

The attempt at placation resulted in both wolves turning tail and padding to the other side of the great room where they settled with a huff.

“Hey, Mother, is there supposed to be some kind of, I don’t know, secret message? Maybe something shared to show a kinship?”

“Kiera, I wish I knew. Truly. However, my knowledge pretty much ended with obtaining it.
