Chapter 11 The Looking Cliff

Kealin looked up at a bright sun. Though he could see his surroundings, it didn't help much with the rough map Ruak had given him. He followed a path out of the elven woodlands and now walked along a rocky road bordering a mountain range. The way was abandoned, and for many paces, he saw no other travelers. It was a hilly road that seemed to be more hill than straight road in many spots. He was climbing higher with everyone, and in so, could see more of the desolation of the northern woodlands that the elves had spoken of. It was a black wasteland devoid of trees, buildings, or any sign of any form of life. He had not seen a green plant since leaving the region just near Risdannia.

The air was hot coming off the road, and he took the time to find the source of water he could hear bubbling nearby. It was a mountain stream coming from a waterfall he could just make out beyond the jagged teeth of a cliff road.

He filled his water pouch and took a drink, looking up at the road. As he traced the path as far as he could, he spotted a face in the rocks.

Intrigued, he looked at his map and guessed he was somewhat still off from the place he was supposed to be, but remembered what the elf had told him. As simple as it sounded, he didn't really feel anything but he figured he was better off following a barely visible mountain road than continuing down one that was deserted. But he was still undecided.

It had been some time since he had really attempted to focus on his Dwemhar powers. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. As his mind relaxed, he felt a sudden shudder against him. A flash of light forced him to open his eyes, and he stared toward the waterfall.

With very little debate, he climbed near the waterfall and pulled himself up on a ledge. Hidden behind the falls, was a very narrow path. He had only enough room for the tips of his feet and the edges of his fingertips, but it was a way to a more open path that cut into the rocks he spotted further up. Looking back, he noticed the emblems of stars cut into the rocks that he could not have seen had he not been standing where he was now.

He had found something, and now following a circular pathway cut into the rocks, he snaked up into the rocky reaches of the hidden road. The path was littered with large stones and broken rocks. The gravel filling in some places caused him to slip, and thorny bushes were not a welcome to someone making their way up. The path narrowed at some points to the degree he could barely find a foothold to keep moving. Whatever this was, he was continually going higher into the sky. Looking up, the clouds made it difficult to see how high he was actually going.
