I follow the wolf through the woods, using the moonlight to track his progress. His gray fur glistens when he steps into the open. He doesn’t do it often, and I wonder if it is an animal instinct to stick to the shadows. But it’s really cool looking when he steps into a shaft of moonlight and he goes all silver.

It’s oddly reassuring to watch Jamey in his wolf form. He seems so calm and confident, powerful and fearless. Which, I guess is what he’s like as a man, too. I didn’t know him very well before Ava. We’ve been classmates for years, but we never hung out. Since Ava, I’ve learned that he’s a good guy. He’s quiet and funny, he doesn’t seem at all insecure, and he is definitely devoted to Ava in a way that feels so easy and solid. He calls it an affinity, says it’s a wolf thing. Regardless, he’s all in. No doubt in my mind. I never thought I would be in a relationship like this, with so many other people… but honestly, I couldn’t have picked a better group of men if I tried.

Jamey stops at the opening to the canyon and looks back, waiting for me to catch up. I heft my backpack with the Mithras Vox more securely on my shoulder and double-time it.

When Ava and I got back to the apartment and told the guys what was going on, everyone had the same kind of reaction—shock and disbelief with a healthy serving of anger. Then everyone, without exception agreed that we couldn’t hand over the book. We brainstormed for a while what to do with the Mithras Vox until Jamey remembered a place he’d found while wandering in the canyon.

I still can’t understand what Stoken is thinking. He may be the head of this school, but with all that’s been happening lately, it’s hard to just lay down and roll over for anyone, even someone like Professor Stoken who, until all of this news, I would have sworn was the most honorable guy in the world. Like the rest of the guys, I have known the headmaster for years.

Raff has spent the most time with him, especially during the summer programs. Even more than I have, and I’ve been his teacher’s assistant since the end of last school year, working side-by-side with him every day for months. When President Deitrich came onto campus, Stoken knew something was wrong. And when he fled, I figured it was important enough—because I trusted him. But now, I don’t know what to think. Granted I haven’t spoken to him myself, but based on Ava’s bizarre meeting with him…

If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear that he must be operating under someone else’s wishes, but the president is the one who was doing that, and he’s dead. We have a lot of new security on campus, but none of them seem to be doing anything weird. So who?

There’s something about all of this that doesn’t square up.
