SERENITY

TWO WEEKS LAT

“You can’t be serious?” I ask Graham incredulously.

He crosses his arms over his chest and glares at me.

I sigh. These past couple of weeks have been amazing. Graham and I have become so much closer, more than I could have ever hoped. I still don’t know about his family, but I’m hoping he’ll open up about it when he feels ready. But he’s become protective, even more so than my brothers are, and right now, he’s being overprotective.

“Graham, seriously,” I say. “You’ve got work to do. I have classes that I have to take.” I’ve tried my hardest to keep up with the workload. Missing my actual job, along with not being able to attend college, has been hard for me. I’m an overachiever; I’m not afraid to admit it. I also know that my anxiety will spike if I don’t get back to normal soon. I can visualize everything piling on top of me, and sooner or later, I’m going to be buried beneath it all.

“Peach, we’re not arguin’,” he says, stepping into my space. “You think that I’m goin’ to let my woman be out in public alone, with the cunts who hurt you walkin’ free? Think again, baby, ‘cause that’s never goin’ to happen.”

The way his jaw is set, along with the determination in his eyes, tells me he’s not budging on this. I know that me getting hurt was a huge trigger for him. It spurred something inside of him. Octavia and Effie told me I need to pick my battles.

“Are you going to be attending my classes too?” I ask, hoping that he won’t because there’s no way I’ll be able to concentrate with him beside me.

His grin tells me he knows exactly what I’m thinking. “No, Peach, I’ll be waitin’ outside. I’ll make sure no one gets near you.”

“Okay, I won’t argue. I know this is something you need to do. I finish at three. I’m not working until next week. Would you prefer it if I come to the auto shop with you after and study there?” He’s not working, no matter how often I tell him I’m safe at the clubhouse. It’s as though he doesn’t want to be apart from me. And I get it, he’s worried, but he has a job to do and I hate that I’m the one who’s keeping him from it.

“Yeah, babe, that’ll be good. You can study in the office,” he tells me. “If there’s anythin’ you need, let me know and I’ll have one of the guys bring it over for you,” he says, his brown eyes soft and filled with emotion.

“I’ll have everything with me. Maybe we can stop for snacks on the way?”

He shakes his head and chuckles. “You need snacks to study?”

I roll my eyes. “Yes, of course. It’s a cardinal sin not to have them. How else are you supposed to feed your brain while it takes in all the information?”

“Get your shit, babe. We’re leavin’ in five,” he says, shaking his head.
