The subdermal implant is a matchstick-sized rod that is inserted into your arm and releases progestin to prevent pregnancy. The implant works like other hormonal methods: by stopping ovulation, and by thickening the cervical mucus so it’s difficult for sperm to swim through on the way up to the uterus. Implants run up to $850 without insurance, but are usually covered by insurance, or some state programs. Even though there’s a high cost up-front, they do end up being one of the cheaper methods because they last four years. Use a backup method your first week with the implant.
