CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT

“Paint?” Whitton looked at her husband as if he’d had much more to drink than he actually had.

Smith had arrived home and told her about what Dr Kenny Bean had said. Smith had made his excuses and left as soon as he could, leaving a very dejected-looking Head of Pathology in his wake.

“This is to go no further, though,” he added. “The bit about doctor Dessai. I promised Kenny I wouldn’t tell anyone.”

“Are you seriously saying there are people out there who paint with human blood?” Whitton was obviously still finding this hard to digest.

“Apparently there are. This could be the break we’ve been looking for. So far we’ve had no idea about why someone would kill a person and remove their blood and now we have.”

Whitton seemed to think hard for a moment. “Do you think Dr Dessai has anything to do with all this?”

“Of course not. She was caught stealing small quantities of blood from a lab. The blood taken from all the recent victims amounts to fifty-times what she took.”

“Maybe she’s upped her game a notch,” Whitton said. “Maybe she needs more to paint bigger paintings.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Erica. There’s a big difference between pocketing a few vials of blood and killing someone and removing eight to ten pints. Besides, I told you I gave Kenny my word.”

“Like he gave his word to a sicko who uses blood as paint. Have you heard yourself? We need to speak to this woman.”

“I said no. Kenny could lose his job if this gets out.”

“He shouldn’t have let her get away with it in the first place.”

“What would you expect me to do?” Smith said in a calm voice. “If we were faced with something similar? Would you expect me to ruin your life over some stupid mistake? They were in a relationship at the time.”

“Don’t you even try and compare that depraved woman with me,” Smith’s calm voice hadn’t had the desired effect. “You know deep down that we need to bring her in and question her. This, ‘I gave him my word’, bollocks just doesn’t wash. If I’d come home with the same story you’re telling me now, you’d pin the label, suspect on her in an instant.”

Smith sighed. “You’re right. You’re right as usual, I would. It’s just a really tricky one. How do I approach Dr Dessai without it coming out that I’ve betrayed Kenny’s confidence?”

“OK,” Whitton said. “Let’s put it another way. How would you live with yourself if it turned out that Dr Dessai had something to do with these murders and you did nothing?”

“Fuck it, I need a strong drink.”

“That’s always the answer with you, isn’t it? A strong drink.”

“Excuse me?”

“That’s your remedy for anything you can’t face,” Whitton said. “Whether it’s work, personal or life in general. Chucking whiskey down your neck is always the cure.”

Smith was about to say something further but realised that more than enough fuel had been added to the fire already. He went through to the kitchen, opened the cupboard and took out a full bottle of Jack Daniel’s.
