Chapter Twenty-Two
Hades didnât sleep. Rather, he watched his bride breathe deeply in his arms, her soft skin warm against his body. At that moment, he couldnât imagine not touching her. He would have been completely content to stay there with her for the rest of eternity catering to her every need.
He was desperate to sheath himself within her body fully, but so in awe of her perfection that it was only mildly painful to resist the urge to wake her and have his wicked way with her again. It was, in fact, painful. His pants were much too tight for his current condition. He set those thoughts aside with force and willed himself to simply enjoy her curled around him, one leg thrown over his, her face pressed into his chest.
As he continued to admire her, he felt a call that couldnât be ignored. He resisted the urge to growl, not wanting to wake her. So, very carefully, he disentangled himself from her slumberous embrace and pressed a feather light kiss to her cheek.
He found a shirt in his wardrobe and quickly donned it, muttering under his breath about terrible timing and how inconvenient it was to be the ruler of the realm.
He left his room and went to the meeting room of his palace where Styx was waiting patiently for him.
âCongratulations, my Lord,â she said bowing reverently. âMay your union be joyous and fruitful.â This was the first time he could recall seeing her with a genuine smile. It made her surprisingly lovely.
âThank you, Lady Styx,â he replied, unable to stop the wide and satisfied grin on his own face. âI take it you have some news for me?â
Her smile melted away, and she grew somber and anxious once again. âYes. The children of Nyx have agreed to come and celebrate with you. Nyx herself wishes to also attend,â she said with an irritated sigh.
Hades wasnât sure what to think of that. Nyx typically kept to herself, rarely venturing out of her secluded cave in the Underworld. He had never visited her even though he knew where she resided. She showed extraordinarily little interest in anything but the deep and the dark.
âThe Fates, of course, will not be in attendance. They asked me to send you their congratulations. They also asked me to remind you of their warning, that it was very nearly upon us all,â she looked at him speculatively, but didnât inquire what that meant.
His brows drew down, concern rushing through him. He had only just gotten Seph, and whatever this turmoil they had seen in the future could be a threat to that. Somehow, he had a feeling that whatever the warning entailed, it circled around his wife. Not her fault, but still the cause.
He rubbed a hand over the stubble on his jaw as he considered. âIndeed, I didnât expect them to come, their work is too important. Besides which, theyâre the ones who are most desperate for us to solve this mystery.â
He sighed heavily.
