Aiko turned another page in her naughty novel, given to her by an American friend over Christmas. In it raunchy English words evoked the carnal pleasures of two women in love – if Aiko had ever known her college education in English would result in nothing but lesbian erotica…well, it was still a good investment.

Beside her, in their spacious bed, Reina tapped a pen against her lips as she filled out her fifth sudoku puzzle of the night. The rate at which she could jot down numbers sometimes made Aiko envious, but she reminded herself she could speak and read English, so their intellectual talents evened out. And yet I’m the one reading porn.

“Nee…” Aiko put her book down and leaned her head on Reina’s shoulder – she could barely recognize her spouse’s sloppy number scribbles on the grid. “How do you do that so quickly? I can’t ever solve those things.”

A shrug nearly gave Aiko a black eye. “Numbers are easy. They’re the same all over the world.”

“You know what else is nearly the same all over the world?” Aiko’s hand extended to touch Reina’s.

“Mou, you’re so muramura lately.” Reina’s lips twitched into a smile. “Not that I’m complaining.”

They kissed once and then went back to their meager entertainments. The English words in Aiko’s book began running into one another, and at some point she got tired of referring to her electronic dictionary for words like “ravaged” and “punani.” She tossed her book aside and grabbed the only thing in her reach written in Japanese.

Dr. Katou’s list of suggested discussions remained largely unanswered – she wants me to penetrate her – but tiny little checks sat by a select few. Aiko scanned the remaining questions and then looked to her spouse, still doing number problems for fun. “Are you in the mood to answer one of these questions?” She hid behind the print out so Reina couldn’t see her abasement.

Reina stabbed her pencil into her current sudoku puzzle. “Depends on the question.”

“The next one says, ‘Ask your partner a question you’ve always wanted to know the answer to.’”

“Whatever.”

“You can go first.”

“A question I’ve always wanted to ask you?” Reina began doodling on the outside of her puzzle.

“And it has to be a ‘real’ question.”

“Hmm.” The doodle turned into a spiral outlining one column of Reina’s game. “Maybe I don’t want to know the answer.”

“Reina.”

She crossed her arms and huffed – something, at least, stirred in her mind, and it wasn’t numbers. “Do you ever wonder what it would be like to do it with a real man?”

Aiko lowered her print out and considered the question. Do “it?” With a “real” man? Before she met Reina, Aiko dated her share of boys – but had never gone further than some kisses and light petting. Reina had been her first in the bedroom, and all the other people they fooled around with were women. “I’ve never really thought about it. I don’t have any desire to have sex with a man.” I’m a lesbian, aren’t I?
