Chapter 7
A few months after the battle for Eskee, Alfred and Dandelion had finally pinpointed the supposed location of the island in Sherry's legend and carried their rowboat up the peninsula it lay north of. They had trained extensively together throughout their travels and Alfred felt like he'd progressed a lot, though Dandelion surprisingly continued to keep up with him despite him thinking he'd caught up to her a while ago. Maybe they mutually helped each other improve, which would please him. While she still didn't reveal much of her background, other than stories of grand adventures, he had become very fond of her as a staunch comrade who always worked hard and rarely complained while she gave it her best. She had also taught him enough of the Dominion's language so he could understand a fair bit by now. Handy Dandy indeed, with her wide breadth of useful skills. They sighted the isle just off the northern coast of Casaria, looking like a rather tall mound through the fog.
"It's not that far from shore at all," Dandelion said. "We could probably swim over there if the water was warmer."
"We could, but even if it wasn't winter that wouldn't be as good for our gear." He exhaled a cloud of white steam as they crossed the beach towards the sea. Their heavy winter coats still didn't fully keep the chill from their bodies. "As short as it'll be, it's going to be a cold ride. You ready?"
"Me? I'm always ready, you're the one who should worry about yourself."
He smiled, having grown to enjoy her tough attitude. "Then let's be off and get those godslaying artifacts to dethrone Metheldâhopefully." They waded into the water, wincing at the chill, and when they had gotten the boat far out enough set it down. They climbed in, rubbed their freezing hands dry and rowed towards the looming isle. "I just hope there's still something to find there, when it's been so easy to reach all this time."
"The locals do say the island is cursed," Dandelion reminded him, "and that the few who've gone there don't come back. I imagine not a lot of people would brave it without pressing need."
Alfred was concerned about the dangers they might find there himself, but Dandelion said she had a good amount of experience exploring and he thought he could handle himself pretty well too. The most worrying possibility was that the fallen angel might yet live there, but if they couldn't deal with an angel that had rebelled against the gods, they probably wouldn't have much hope of taking down the "God" of the West.
As their boat moved closer through the mist, the form of the isle grew clearer. It was a relatively small, hilly one, tapering up towards the middle until it flattened out into a plateau at the top. Upon the plateau stood a massive white building, like a palace or castle but wider than any Alfred had seen. Surprising that it still looked clean, at least from afar, after so many years.
