CHAPTER NINETEEN :

When Adrian heard of Jen’s past, he then understood just why she was being targeted. “These criminals are probably looking for Jen at the airports, so I think she had better stay here in the U.K., for now. I don’t want either of you to come here, since everybody knows exactly where MI6 is and these guys probably have lookouts for her.”

Alex could understand the serious situation they were in, but countered, “Yes, but we can’t stay hidden for ever. I’d much sooner do something to find them and neutralize the threat.”

Adrian had a hint of impatience in his voice. “Alex, this is not Afghanistan. The ‘Ndrangheta are even more difficult to locate than the Taliban. You don’t even know where to start looking.”

“We’ve fucking well got to do something!” Alex felt so impotent and just wanted somewhere to start.

“Okay.” Adrian was thinking fast, anxious to help these two whose lives were, now, in extreme danger. “First, you two need different identities. I’ll give you an address where this can be done, without the need to come here.”

“Okay. We will need as much information about the ‘Ndrangheta as possible. More than we could find just on the internet.” Alex was now thinking like a soldier once again.

“That’s no problem. With Christin’s assistance, I can get all the data we need and send you files on them which will tell you everything there is to know, except their location.”

“Great!” Alex had a sudden thought. “What about Elsa? She identifies me better than any I.D.”

“That’s true. It’s up to you, really. If you wish, I can ask Kate to take her back for a few weeks. How would you feel about that?”

What Adrian had said made good sense, but he would feel guilty about sending her back. “Let me think about that.” He looked down at Elsa. As usual, she seemed attentive and, since he had mentioned her name, apparently, listening to every word of his conversation. He knew that it would be unfair on the dog and decided that, somehow, they were going to have to work with her even through this present danger. Alex did know that, when necessary, he could leave Elsa in the apartment, without any problem.

The following day, Alex and Jen travelled, by taxi, to the address Adrian had given them. Alex had decided that it may make life easier if he went to this place as a sighted person.

Strangely, the place in Adrian’s directions appeared to be a small, greeting card shop, but, when they asked for Pauline, as instructed, the person behind the counter escorted them into a back room.

Pauline was a small, dark-haired, middle-aged woman who welcomed them enthusiastically. “So pleased to meet you both.” As she spoke, she was already studying them, assessing how she could give them plausible, new identities.

Her colleague, Rich, was given the task of assisting Alex with his new profile, while she would, herself, be looking after Jen.

“We’ll leave the girls in here and use the spare room.
