Chapter Sixteen

Tino had the list of places Rico stayed according to Manuel, who had become cooperative once he realized Tino had no compunction of sending him straight back to Rico as a snitch. His contact at DEA promised to send people to several of the sites. He also called in a favor with acquaintances over at ICE. With any luck, they’d have Rico in custody by tomorrow and he could hunt down Isabella.

One of the civilian women who worked the office knocked on the open door.

“Sí?”

“This arrived for you.” She placed a small package on his desk.

“Was it hand delivered?” He noticed there wasn’t a return address and just his name in black felt marker.

“Yes. Some Hispanic man walked in, said it was for you, and walked out.”

Tino rounded the desk. “How long ago?”

“Ten or fifteen minutes. I waited until I saw the light on the phone go off.”

“¡Carajo!” He stared at the package. It appeared to be flimsy. “What did it feel like?” Most bombs were in boxes.

“It felt like clothing and possibly a book.” Her face reddened.

“You were trying to figure out what I would have delivered to me at the station?”

Her lashes lowered in embarrassment. “Yes. You’ve been living here. I imagined you ordered clothes.

He pointed to just his name. “But there is no address. How would a store know to send me clothes?”

She shrugged.

“Ask Crow to come in here please.” Tino sat back down at the desk and moved the package around with a letter opener. Did he open it? Was it a trap sent to him from Rico? His nerves and desire to rip it open and find out had his mind buzzing.

“Sharon said you wanted to see me.” Crow leaned against the door jamb.

“This package was delivered by hand for me.” Tino used the letter opener to shove the package across the desk.

Crow pushed away from the doorframe and approached the desk. “I see. Not your typical wrapping for a bomb.”

“That’s what I thought. Grab some rubber gloves and masks and meet me behind the building.”

The man nodded and exited.

Tino dusted the envelope for prints. He picked up several sets and placed them in an evidence bag. Once he collected the fingerprints and took several photos of the package, he carried it out the back door.

Crow, Tank, and Charlie all stood by a utility spool about thirty feet from the back door.

He placed the package on the spool, donned the rubber gloves and mask, and motioned for the others to back up. Flicking open his knife, Tino sliced the end off the package and using the blade lifted the wrapping.

The faded olive green color started his hands trembling. He picked up the other end of the package, tipping it. His worse fear slammed into him with more impact than if there had been a bomb in the package.

“No!” He grasped the edges of the spool with both hands to keep him on his feet as he stared down at Isabella’s survival vest and journal. A folded paper stuck out of the top of the journal.
