“Sophie?” I yelled through the house as I closed the door behind me. I didn’t know where she was and I hoped she wasn’t doing anything she would regret. I found her sitting on the couch in the living room, her chin resting on her knees. She was curled up in a ball, her eyes red and filled with tears.

“You lied to me,” she hissed as I came closer to her.

“I’m sorry,” I said as I sat down on the coffee table. “I only did it to protect you.”

“I don’t care!” she snarled. “I just wanted to know! And you’ve been lying to my face all this time.”

There was nothing I could say tonight that would make her forgive me. I knew that. The only thing I could do that wasn’t going to make things worse was tell her the story. At least if I did that, maybe she would understand my motivation.

“Yes, I knew your mother,” I said. I had rehearsed this conversation in my head so many times, but I had never had the courage to say it out loud. “Jared knew her too because we all went to university together.”

It was time to tell her the full story.

“Her name was Breanna, but everybody called her Bree. She looked just like you: blonde hair and the sweetest smile.”

“Why are you talking about her in the past?” Sophie asked, interrupting me.

“Let me finish,” I said. There was no point in rushing to the end. “She wanted to be a nurse. The only reason I knew her is because we were in the same writing class during our first year. We weren’t close, but we did know each other. She was a very nice and lively person who liked to take care of everyone. She would have been a great nurse.”

I paused, looking at Sophie. I didn’t know what was going on in her mind, but she had calmed down some.

“During the second semester, we learned that she was pregnant. Nobody knew how that had happened and she didn’t share it with anybody. A few months down the road, she started skipping classes, and then she completely dropped out of school. After that, I didn’t see her again.”

The hard part was coming. What I had just shared with Sophie was fine. I could have told her that years ago, but I had to tell her the whole story now. It was definitely not the happy ending she was hoping for and that was why I didn’t know how to tell her. The last thing I wanted was for her to think of herself in a different way because of what her mother had done. It wasn’t Sophie’s fault, and I didn’t want her to take that burden on her shoulders.

“Two years later, we heard that she had passed away…” I started, deciding to break the news to her slowly. “She had run into a lot of problems and couldn’t cope with them anymore, so she took her own life.”

I looked into Sophie’s eyes, trying to find a sign of emotion.
