CHRIS HELD a hand over his mouth as he stepped into the coroner’s office, bracing for the smell. The doctor looked up from the cadaver he was working on to acknowledge him.

“Detective.”

“Wayne, have you completed the postmortem on the Stewart case?” Chris had gotten to know Wayne Riddick, the tall and lean thirtysomething doctor with jet black hair and dark chocolate eyes. He didn’t look like the kind of guy who’d be butchering corpses for a living. He seemed more like a doctor you’d see on a soap opera. The joke was that he was so good-looking, patients were dying to see him.

“I have. You wanna see the body?”

“That won’t be necessary. I’ve seen the photos, and I can get what I need from your report.” Examining a corpse before breakfast held no particular appeal. His stomach already churned just from being in the examination room.

Oblivious to Chris’s queasiness, the coroner peeled off his bloody gloves one at a time and tossed them into the wastebasket. He stepped over to a counter and picked up a clipboard.

“Seems the victim was under the influence at the time of the attack. Blood-alcohol level of point one six. Other than that, no controlled substances. He suffered numerous contusions, a fractured left tibia, four fractured ribs, and a concussion. Didn’t die from any of those injuries, though. Looks like he drowned.”

“Really? But from the pictures, he looked pretty messed up.”

“Oh, he was messed up all right. Lot of bruising, and the blow to his head likely rendered him unconscious.”

“Does it appear the injuries were all caused by a single weapon?”

The doctor looked up from the clipboard, establishing eye contact. “Most likely, or from similar weapons, probably something the size of a baseball bat. Aluminum.”
