Chapter Twelve

On Monday, Petrina wasn’t sure of what to wear on her date with Papadakis. It was either the black shirt with the gray pants, or the white shirt with the black pants.

“Wear something pretty,” her mother said.

“What’s wrong with these?”

“Not very colorful for a date.”

Her brother Vassilis came into the room. “Pastels. Guys like girls who were pastels.”

“Oh, are you implying my personality isn’t enough?”

“Always so serious.” Petrina’s mother patted her cheek. “You could smile more.”

“I smile.”

“Petrina doesn’t want the world seeing all those giant cavities in her teeth!” Vassilis said, leaving the room. He went out to the patio to help Nicholas work on the old scooter that was coming together faster now that two of them were working on it.

“It’s not even a real date,” Petrina said, now changing her clothes.

“It’s a picnic. That’s a first date.”

“It’s eating lunch while sitting on the ground and someone else happens to be there at the same time.”

“Don’t be so resistant. Have you heard from your friend Jessica?” Kostantina asked.

“Not since late last night. I heard Warner is very picky about how she likes things done.”

“So are you. Is she planning on going with them when they leave Rhodes?”

“In a way, I hope she does. That line of work doesn’t pay nearly as well as what she was doing before, but it’s a lot healthier. There are a lot of questions about that yacht right now, and it’s not going anywhere for a while.”

“What kind of questions?” her mother asked.

“Whether or not someone on the yacht had something to do with that man’s death.”

“The floating American? That’s what the media is calling him. According to them, nobody liked him very much.”

“He has a name. Even if he was a jerk, he didn’t deserve to die for it. He also deserves a proper investigation, if for no other reason than to find who did it and put them in jail for a few decades. That’s why I’m involved. I’m supposed to be looking for the person who took a swing at him.”

“Why are you going on a date if you’re looking for a murderer?” Kostantina asked.

She couldn’t tell her mother that she was also a part of an undercover investigation that possibly involved the Greek immigration officials at the ferry terminal. If she did that, half of Athens would know about it by lunchtime.

“I thought you’d be happy I was going on a date?” Petrina said.

“I am, but aren’t there priorities?”

“Of course there are. Does that mean you’re finally listening to me when I talk about the parts of my job that I can’t talk about?”

“I’d listen more if you made more sense.”

“Thanks for the encouragement.” Petrina checked her pockets before going outside to wait for Papadakis. It was a semi-official police investigation and she felt she needed to take more with her than a set of keys and her phone. It was also a semi-unofficial non-date, and she wouldn’t be expected to take much with her.

Papadakis arrived exactly on time.
