Chapter 28

Hidden Plan

Diego Martinez

Family ranch

New Mexico

Governor Hernandez arrived at the ranch just as Martinez finished off reading the last-colored binder the governor had sent to him. He grinned and nodded in approval at the contents. He couldn’t believe his luck that US Army Command had provided him with a blueprint to legitimize his operation, without having them looking over his shoulder. The path was now clear for him to take complete control of New Mexico. He glanced at the calendar on the wall. He reckoned Brogan and his team would be leaving the northern tip of Arizona on his journey north anytime that day. All he needed was for Brogan to succeed in his mission and his future and that of New Mexico and hopefully Texas, would be mapped out. Still, it was a long shot. He didn’t trust Brogan not to try and escape before he even arrived at his destination. Gold or no gold, he was determined to carry on with his plan. He stepped outside the plastic sheeting on the patio. The sound of the generator humming, together with the clanking of the printing press churning out sheets of a run of currency bills in one of his barns, brought a smile to his face.

Giant escorted Governor Hernandez toward Martinez.

“Senior Hernandez, welcome. Step inside and take a seat,” he said, and parted the plastic sheeting. Martinez noticed that Hernandez looked troubled. “You have problems?”

“I’m getting harassed by the opposition for granting your pardons. The only thing they don’t know about yet is your change of name.”

Martinez slapped his hand on the security folder.

“Then write out a list of names. According to the contents of the security binder, we now have the authority to legitimately execute those found guilty of corruption. I’m sure we can come up with trumped up scenarios to charge them. As the commander of the National Guard, I will be the jury,” he said and then laughed. “It won’t take many firing squads for the dissent to quieten down. Stop worrying, leave that side of it to me.”

Hernandez set a half-smile, his eyes giving away that he was still troubled.

“Forget it, we have more pressing matters to deal with. People are starving to death and soon there will be no people to govern. Through this indoor-agricultural plan the Army has been good enough to provide us with, we will make you the savior of the people, then no one will worry about pardons. You’ll be the hero of New Mexico.”

“But we don’t have the expertise, or the equipment.”

Martinez studied him. He didn’t think he deserved to be a governor, and neither would the legitimate electorate. Without his help, he knew that he would never have won the election.

“You have read the contents of all of the binders I take it?”

“Not all of them. I’ve just skimmed through them.”

Martinez pushed back in his chair and rolled his eyes, thinking he was going to be the one who would have to do all the work.

“If we follow the plans in the binders on the table, we will all be wealthy beyond our wildest dreams.
