Unless you can install these systems yourself (some are designed for owner installation), you should add quite a few more beers to the cost of your ice cubes. Some manufacturers, anticipating the inevitable, supply what they call “cruising kits” for their cooling systems. They cost the equivalent of another 45 beers and contain the bits and pieces you need for routine maintenance. When something happens that’s not routine—and you can be sure that it eventually will—you’re on your own.

There are small household-type fridges that run on the heat from a gas or kerosene flame, and you might be tempted to buy one because they are very efficient. Resist the temptation, however, because the dangers associated with a constantly burning open flame on a small boat are too great to live with. Don’t try to rationalize this by using the fridge only in port where it’s calm: You’ll still be leaving a flame burning when you go ashore. It’s just not worth the risk, and your insurance company will confirm that. There is, it seems, no cheap, simple, long-lasting, and reliable way to make ice on a small boat.
