Chapter 14

“All I’m saying is, you need to talk to them.” Michelle whispered next to him in bed. Bauman was turning him paranoid as well. He had a boom box playing a cd on the other side of the room. He hoped it masked anything they said, if anyone was listening. Bauman had been a cop, and he wouldn’t put it past the guy to try and plant a bug in his room.

Sleepy knew Bauman had people watching him during the day, to see if he was somehow getting chummy with the new guys. Some of whom were on thin ice with Bauman and most of the other hard cases. They’d been able to hold on to their women, those that had been found with them. Except a couple of cases where the women wanted nothing to do with the men they’d been found with. Those same women were now down in the ballroom, and he wondered if any of them regretted their decision.

It was the same old story. The new foundlings as a group, were a mixture of people trying to hang on to some decency, and others who had given up all pretense of even trying. Some of the new people they’d found during the snow storm had taken to Bauman’s power structure with enthusiasm, others not so much.

It was the latter group Michelle wanted him to talk to.

“How many you think there are?”

“Grant’s whole team, the librarian looking guy, and Bobby, and that other guy, the stocky bald headed one that’s friends with him.”

“Jay?”

“Yeah, that’s him. And he’s gotten pretty tight with those two newbies that walked in a couple of days ago. Kirby and the other one…”

Sleepy did the math. That was eight, maybe nine, gun carriers; nowhere close to enough.

“Reed,” he answered. “At least that’s what he goes by.” He didn’t need to be reminded of Kirby and Reed. The two-armed men had been discovered doing their own foraging inside the mall. Somehow, they’d managed to walk right through the security patrols on the perimeter without having been seen. Bauman had verbally torn him a new asshole on that one. Not that he could have done anything about it. It was impossible to get soldiers to stay awake during the boredom of guard duty, when most of them had been up partying all night. Which is was what most of them did, every night.

But yes, he could definitely add Kirby and Reed to his list. Potential list, he corrected himself. Eight guns, and him, against Bauman and at least a couple, or three dozen that would fight hard to preserve their position and authority, maybe more. If it came to a fight, there were others that might come around if they thought Bauman was going to lose. Some of that same group would just as readily turn him in if they thought it would mean extra privileges.

“It’s not enough, not even close.” he whispered. “It’s something that’ll just get us all killed, you and their women thrown into the ballroom - if you’re lucky.
