She’s not at all sure she wants to do this, but sees no way around it.

Standing in the baking sun, near the gate, Circuit right next to her, Oz thinks about what she’s going to say to Dr. Eisenfield. Even though she’s convinced that Minoan descendants built the tunnel system, there’s no way to persuade him that is true unless she delivers the black stone to him, which she’s not about to do. But what will convince him must be down there. And with Sid’s meltdown, she didn’t get a chance to search for it.

But if there is anything down there as advanced as the stone, she’d like to examine it first, before Dr. Eisenfield could take it away.

So she wants him to see the tunnels and the river and what defining artifacts she suspects they will find—which will prove the Minoan connection—yet not stop her from finding the truly advanced technology that she believes is there. She’s going to have to move extremely quickly.

In any case, she has to report right now. She can already see Sid off in the distance, excitedly talking to the other students. News of the river and the tunnel system will spread like wildfire in seconds, if it hasn’t already.

She pulls out her commD to make the call.

At first she gets that “do not interrupt” symbol. But she signals the message is urgent, and the screen dissolves into the frowning, why-are-you-bothering-me face of archeology professor Dr. Eisenfield.

Oz just says, “We found something.”

“And what might that be?” Dr. Eisenfield says with annoyance running all through his voice with the lethargy of assumed superiority.

Oz would like to slap him. “That would be a vast tunnel system underground that leads to a large and rapidly flowing river.”

She can see Eisenfield was not expecting this. His mouth hangs open for a second. A little tiny mouth on a little tiny screen. “A what?”

“An underground river.”

“Okay, okay. Who discovered. . . who saw all this? Just you?”

“Me and Sid.”

“Then I want the two of you to keep quiet about this. Tell no one.”

“Too late for that. Sid is . . . well, he’s pretty much telling everyone here.”

“That stupid . . .” Dr. Eisenfield grinds the word between his teeth, stops talking, and in the several seconds of silence that follows Oz can practically hear the machinery in his head working to spit out the next command. “Okay, this is what we’re going to do. Nobody, I mean nobody, is to go down there until I arrive. Got that?”

“Yeah, got it.” She’s got it all right. Him wanting to contain the damage already done and then to lead a team down there so that he can claim he discovered the tunnels. A behavior she knows only too well.

Conversation over.

Overhead, several more news bots race to the site to join the two already here but the security bots keep them from crossing directly on to the property, but with their high-resolution cameras the news bots don’t really need to cross that boundary.
