Chapter 11

When Lamia called them for dinner an hour later, both Kevin and Scylla were starving. They entered the dining room and the scents surrounded them, an intoxicating blend of meats and sauces, pastas and vegetables, wines, breads, and candles.

“It smells amazing in here,” Kevin said with an appreciative glance of longing at the spread of food covering the length of the large dining table. He sat down in the seat next to Scylla and unfolded a linen napkin into his lap. “Your mom didn’t have to go to all this trouble for me,” he whispered.

She snorted laughter and looked at him like he was nuts. “Are you kidding? She didn’t cook all of it by herself. Besides, we always eat like this. The rest of the family loves it.”

“I didn’t see anyone else but your mom here, though. Who helped her with dinner? And where is your dad?”

Scylla laughed at him. “The gargoyles wake up at sunset, so they help out in the kitchen, and Nyvek loves to cook. So does Dad, who’s probably in the kitchen putting on the finishing touches to dessert.”

It was Kevin’s turn to laugh as he pictured Nemesis wearing an apron and brandishing a large wooden spoon, then the rest of her sentence registered. “Wait, did you say gargoyles? Like, the statues in the yard?”

Scylla nodded. “Yes, those would be the only gargoyles hanging around.”

“But they’re statues.”

She smiled and shook her head. “Not at night.”

Kevin felt a chill run up his spine. “Who is Nyvek? Your brother or another gargoyle?”

Scylla shook her head as she looked over the dishes of food. “No, he’s a demon,” she said absently. “I don’t have a brother or sister.”

“A demon? You’re serious?”

“Yes, I’m serious. What’s the big deal? Demons and angels hang out here just as much as anyone else.”

Kevin let out a nervous laugh. “I’m not sure I want to know how you know that,” he said.

Scylla shrugged and focused her attention back to him. “I figured you knew all this already,” she told him and he shook his head. “Man, and I was the one raised in the dark.”

The first of the invited members of the family arrived and Scylla rose to greet them ending their conversation for the time being.

“Scylla! It’s been ages!” crowed Atropos as they embraced.

“It’s only been a day or two,” Scylla reminded her aunt and the ancient woman smiled. “A lifetime, to some creatures."

Following Atropos were Lachesis and Clotho and Scylla hugged them in turn. As the three Fates approached the table their eyes fell on Kevin and they looked to Scylla expectantly.

“Who is this lovely young man, Scy?” Lachesis asked with a knowing grin at her niece.

“I was going to wait until everyone got here to make introductions,” said Scylla, “But I guess now is as good a time as any. Guys, this is my friend Kevin,” she stole a glance to see what Kevin’s reaction was to being called only “friend”, but he seemed too distracted by the three Fates to pay any attention to what she was saying.
