CHAPTER 7

The NVA camp near Nhu Ky,

North Vietnam

Fetterman killed the sentry.

It was a simple thing to do. As the rover walked past the Special Forces men concealed in the tall grass, Fetterman, still wearing the Ninja suit, rose silently from the ground, took two steps, and swung both hands back over his head, the handles of a piano-wire garrote clenched in his fists. Fetterman snapped his arms down, throwing the garrote over the sentry’s head and pulling it rearward and down. As the wire bit into the man’s throat, Fetterman drove his knee into his back and pulled him backward against this fulcrum. Then, bringing his elbows together, the Green Beret sergeant spun to the left, crossing the wire of the garrote over itself as he bent sharply forward at the waist, then straightened his legs, lifting the NVA trooper’s feet clear of the ground. The wire cut deeply into the man’s throat from bottom to top. Fetterman completed his movement by bringing the man on over on his head, in a throw designed to snap the neck, then finished the attack by driving a knee into the sentry’s collarbone, snapping it, and pulling the garrote tight.

Except for the snapping of his neck and collarbone, the only sound the NVA trooper had made was a dull thud as he hit the wet grass.

Wilson, who had never seen a man actually garroted and had observed the attack from only a few feet away, fought hard to keep from being sick. The master sergeant’s sudden, brutal attack had completely severed the enemy soldier’s head.

Fetterman quickly dragged the body a few feet into the elephant grass, where it would be less likely to be discovered should anyone look, and relieved the corpse of its weapon. Then he showed Gerber the spot where he had entered the camp earlier. The location was shielded from observation from the watchtower by the back of the tailor shop and the front corner of the supply building.

After indicating the spot where the fence had been cut, Fetterman slipped back into the high grass with Sergeant First Class Tyme. The two men would work their way along the fence line, crawling slowly through the grass until they were at a point opposite the building believed to be the camp armory. They would then cut a new passage through the wire and come up behind the building, which would place them between the radio shack and the officers’ quarters, their primary targets. Because the high grass offered some cover and the intervening buildings tended to partially obstruct the view from the watchtower, both Fetterman and Gerber believed that such a route would be safer than attempting to crawl through the NCO quarters as Fetterman had done earlier.
