Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.
Breathe, Charlie. Breathe.
Try to create space. Try not to let your mind wander back over the last fifteen minutes. Thereâs quite literally no way I can do those things.
Is he flirting with me?
Why would he flirt with me?
Heâs quite literally one of the worldâs most eligible bachelors. He could, and likely has, had any woman he wants. He was curt with me parts of the day. Some could say he is downright rude. Itâs like a different man came into the lobby tonight after his time with Kyle. The man who just put the rose in my hand is not the same man who gave me the edict of be on time or else when this all began.
Iâm wrangling him. Thatâs all I should be doing. His reputation was shattered nearly instantly. I never once saw him be unkind to anyone who worked at the bookstore or anyone in line to greet him today. He became this person I needed to know once Kyle and Jane spoke to him. The song âFor Goodâ from Wicked kept coming to mind over and over again. However, the way he spoke to Liam inside a minute ago doesnât add up, unless youâre mixing in a bit of jealousy.
He has nothing to be jealous of. A whole lot of nothing. I told him I had a boyfriend. Thereâs no way he could know this, but I havenât been on more than two dates with a man in five years. Ninety percent of them donât get past the first date. I donât know if itâs them or me. Iâd like to think itâs not me. Iâve just spent more time trying to cultivate my career than worrying about my love life.
Liamâs little bit of attention felt good. Itâs been a long time since Iâve felt someone, other than Simon or James, has given me that damn-you-are-hot look. Maxâs gaze and presentation with the rose felt like it went even beyond that. He looked at me like he wanted to fuck me, like he said Liam did. I didnât get those vibes from Liam in our conversation. I definitely got them from Max.
I know his reputation. Historical romance would call him a rake. Contemporary romance would call him a manwhore. The slang term I would use is playboy. Heâs a money-infused shot of adrenaline I should keep my eye on and stay clear of. I break the rose off and put it in his lapel. Iâm trying to make it a metaphor. Iâm trying to say without saying again; Iâm not available.
I hope I get my message across.
The entire time we stand outside waiting for the limo driver to bring the car back, all I feel is watched. I know he misses nothing. Itâs not only a personality trait for him, but I think itâs something more. No one is that observant or competitiveâ¦at least I havenât met themâ¦until today.
My phone buzzes inside my clutch. I pull it out to see if itâs the venue from earlier.
