CHAPTER 9

Dominic was knee deep into the end of year financials, and working on finalizing the budget when an insistent knock drew his eyes to the door. He found Damien standing stock still with an expectant look on his face.

“What’s up?”

“I need to talk to you,” Damien said softly, “you have a minute?”

Dominic glanced at his monitor knowing that he needed to finish the task at hand, with only three weeks to the extended holiday break through the first of the year all the department heads were awaiting his final approval of their budgets for next year’s planning. Glancing back at his brother something told him he needed to give him the time. Nodding, he watched Damien enter his office and close the door behind him. Not a word was spoken from his normally gregarious brother, until he was seated. Even then he glanced about and didn’t immediately state his reason for the visit, leaving Dominic anxious about what was going to come next.

“I am leaving today,” Damien said not yet meeting Dominic’s gaze. “I need to get back to Jillian.”

Dominic was surprised at the emotion he could hear in Damien’s voice.

“She has been around for quite some time now.”

“Yeah, in fact, I was going to bring her with but she is on assignment covering the happenings in Paris right now.”

Jillian was a reporter, and from what Dominic had ascertained from the brief conversation he and Damien had over Thanksgiving, a respected member of that profession. She also was one of the first women, not a party girl his brother had kept company with, and it was obviously good for settling Damien.

“I know mom would love to meet her next time you are in town,” Dominic said still intensely watching his brother’s face trying to figure out his real reason for the visit.

“I would never make a good father,” Damien said out of thin air.

Dominic was momentarily taken aback, “I think you could do anything you put your mind to, and we had an example of a great father you could imitate.”

“We did at that – but Dom, I truly have zero interest in being a dad. In fact, I’ve taken extra steps after finding out about Brayden to ensure surgically that would never happen again to me,” he said punctuating his statement with a look that filled in the spaces for Dominic.

“You had a vasectomy?”

“Yes, Jillian is not a kid person either and my lifestyle even without her in it, would not be conducive to raising a kid.”

Dominic had to noodle the information over in his head, realizing in short order he did not share his brother’s sentiments on the subject. “Well, I have to say Brayden is one of the best things you ever did, brother.”

“Yeah, and when anyone sees the two of you together – well, I know that even though I cannot step up the way you and mom would wish – the kid will be well loved and taken care of by the two of you.
