A couple of hours later, the four of us walked into the small grocery store. We were originally just stopping to switch drivers, but then Harlee pointed out how rude it is to show up at somebody’s house empty-handed, so we decided to get Elyssa’s mother some wine and flowers as a thank you for letting us stay.

“All right, I told Elyssa we’ll be there in two or three hours,” Bree said, slipping her phone into her pocket.

“Perfect,” I replied.

“Here’s the wine aisle,” Harlee said. She paused in front of the selection. “Although, now that I’m thinking about it, we would have better luck at an actual alcohol store.”

“Alcohol store?” Kiara asked in amusement.

“I don’t know what stores they have in Ontario!” Harlee said.

“They have the LCBO,” Bree supplied. She pulled up Google Maps. “But there isn’t one anywhere near here, so unless we want to go out of our way a little…”

“This will be fine,” Harlee said. She grabbed a bottle of red wine off the shelf. “This looks nice enough. Now onto flowers.”

She led the way out of the aisle again, not giving us a chance to argue. To be fair, she definitely knew the most about wine, and I was sure the rest of us did not have any strong opinions on the matter anyway.

The flowers were at the front of the shop. There wasn’t a very big selection, but there was still enough for us to argue over which ones we should pick.

“How about this one?” Kiara asked. “A calla lily.”

“No,” Bree said immediately.

“Why not?” Kiara asked.

“You know why.”

“What’s wrong with it?” I asked. My view was blocked by some other plants.

“It’s inappropriate,” Bree said.

“How can a flower be inappropriate?” I asked.

“It looks like a pussy,” Harlee supplied. She grabbed the flower from Kiara and held it up so I could see. I blinked. While not an exact replica by any means, I definitely understood what she meant.

“Yeah, we cannot get that for Elyssa’s mother,” I agreed.

“Why not?” Kiara asked. “We’re all gay women, it works out.”

“Her mother’s not!” I said.

“Technically we don’t know that,” Kiara said. “Besides, she probably won’t even notice.”

“Then why do you want to do it so badly?” Bree asked.

Kiara grinned. “Mainly because it would embarrass the hell out of Elyssa.”

“No way,” I said. I shook my head. “I am not giving that to our host.”

“Agreed,” Bree said. Kiara rolled her eyes but she put it away.

“You guys have no sense of humour,” she said.

“We’re not saying her reaction wouldn’t be hilarious,” Bree said, “because it would be. We just don’t want to see her mother’s reaction.”

“Even if she did notice, she probably wouldn’t say anything,” Kiara said.

“Let’s not test the theory,” I said. I grabbed a bouquet of wildflowers. “How about this? Nice, simple and does not resemble genitalia in any way.”

“Perfect,” Harlee said. “Let’s go before we spot something else we like and spend too much money.”

We made it halfway to the cash register before Kiara gasped loudly and ran to the other end of the store.
