I lay in bed with my mind whirling through a thousand possibilities. Elias woke a sleeping part of me I completely forgot existed. He ignited the creative spark and brought me back to life.
Jesus Christ, how could I go so many years without this? Why did it take a lowly bodyguard to remind me of what I always should have known? He was no lowly bodyguard, though. He was so much more. He was a renaissance man with unlimited potential. That guy could do anything and he knew it. All he had to do was try.
Could I possibly think of myself that way? Could I possibly have that kind of potential lying dormant in my soul? Could I restore myself the way I tried to restore the rest of humanity?
God, the idea of leaving Restoration Labs made me so happy and excited I couldnât contain it all. A surge of adrenaline burned my insides when I imagined sitting down at my workbench to build another device.
When had I ever felt that thrilling excitement before? Not even men gave me that kind of jolt. They didnât interest me at all compared to my work, but now this new road opening before me electrified my body in new and mysterious ways. It left me quivering and hungry from something, something alive and hot and unstoppable.
It made me want a man, but not just any man. It made me want him. He understood. He saw it in me when I couldnât see it in myself. He never questioned if I should walk away from Restoration Labs. His only question was, Would that make you happy?
Not even Erin cared about me in that way? She never asked if the job made me happy. Fuck, she was the job to me. She was my taskmaster, my handler. Her one duty was to keep me running on that treadmill âtil I dropped from exhaustion.
That wasnât true. I did that to myself. She just carried it out. She was supposed to be my best friend, but she became a slave driver to me. She never once questioned if I was happy. It never entered her head.
Elias. How could a man be so talented and insightful andâ¦..connected? He never did anything but from his heart. Every client, every sculptureâeverything he did radiated his heart to the rest of the world. Life wasnât worth living to him without that.
Could I possibly do the same thing? Could I chisel away the armor holding me back from the rest of humanity? Could I rebuild my ability to connect to people?
He excited me out of my mind. The exhilaration of inventing something new got all mixed up with fevered hallucinations of someone huge and solid and smoldering hot behind me, moving in rhythm with me, filling me with torrential ecstasy.
Was I excited about the project or â¦. something else? I couldnât tell the difference. His energy fueled my drive to create. It injected fire into my being to become something wholly new and unapologetically alive.
