When it came time to clean the Sapphire Room, his room, Lydia crossed her fingers and hoped to be done before Cole came back and she was forced into another conversation with him. Somehow, too many of their conversations turned into her daydreaming about what might happen if she jumped out of the frying pan into the fire.

She wasn’t upset about him staying. She was upset at her reaction to him staying.

Just as she was finishing up, Cole walked in. Suddenly the room felt too small for the two of them. Especially when the bed was taking up most of the space.

“I just put fresh sheets on the bed,” she announced. And immediately regretted it.

The look he gave her said he wanted her on that bed, breathless, wearing nothing but a dazed expression and her birthday suit.

She fled into the bathroom, grabbed the cleaning tote and prepared to vamoose. “I’m finished in here. I’ll just get out of your way now.”

“You’re not in my way, Lydia.” He stood blocking the exit.

No, but you’re in mine. Her grip on the cleaning tote tightened.

“You don’t have to go.” He stepped aside, daring her to stay.

She made it through the doorway and into the bedroom. Then she spun around. “Is it true you’re sticking around for a while?”

“I thought I’d stay at least until the summer carnival. Why? You ready for me to leave?”

“No. I mean, you can leave whenever you want to. I’m just verifying what I heard.”

“Everybody’s talking about it?”

“They don’t talk about anything else.”

“Huh. Almost makes you want to actually give them something worth talking about.”

“Not at my expense.” She headed for the room’s main door, full speed ahead. What had started out as protecting Junior from Cole had turned into protecting herself.

“Would you just stop for a minute and listen to me?”

When she turned around, the tote banged against the bed. “I’ve been listening to other people my whole life, Cole. They’ve all got their own agendas and I don’t have time for that kind of bull.” Time to go now.

“I’m not here to spew bullshit, Lydia. Please, look at me.”

She sighed heavily and turned away from the bed to look at him. “You’ve been carrying around a bag full of it ever since you blazed into town.”

“I know,” he said. It took a lot to say those words out loud. To admit that he’d been an arrogant peacock, strutting around and flaunting his fame. “And I finally realized, thanks to you, that what I have is worth holding onto. Let me hold on to you, Lydia. Let me make you feel a little bit of what I feel whenever you walk into a room. Let me show you how much you mean to me.”

The dazed expression he’d been looking forward to settled nicely onto her face.

She simply stared at him, blinking and not saying anything.

“I want to take you to dinner.” He also wanted to walk her home and kiss her on her doorstep until she invited him inside.
