Destiny

The coffee shop felt like a nightmare or a movie. It couldn’t be real. Couldn’t be.

Except, the tang of blood filled my nose even as we stepped onto the street. And the wail of sirens sent a shiver down my spine. Police were nearby, probably coming our way. But could we trust them? I’d thought the officers currently cooling back at the café could be trusted, and I was wrong. Nothing made sense anymore.

“We have to get out of the city.” Theo grabbed my hand, his grip dwarfing my fingers, and pulled me down a maze of streets. “We can’t trust anyone.”

I could see a splatter of blood on his thumbnail, but otherwise, he looked the same as he had before. I wondered how many times he’d shot someone. Was he just as thrown by all of this as me, or was his job as a personal bodyguard more intense than I ever could have imagined?

“What about Alyson?” I was thinking about how she would get out of the city, but then I remembered I’d sent her the coffee shop address. If she was on her way there, she’d run into the officers coming to handle the scene. She’d run into the officers who may or may not be officers. Who could try to lure her away from the scene and hurt her because of her connection to me?

I yanked my hand away from Theo and pulled out my phone, quickly tapping out a message to my best friend.
