My foot taps against the pew in front of me as I watch Liam give his sermon. I’ve relocated to the front row now, making sure he sees me with a mildly interested expression. Anything to convince him that every fucking second in this church–if you can even call it that–doesn’t repulse me. It’s all going to be worth it. It’s all going to work out. Liam is beginning to trust me, and I’ve made my hesitation believable. Now, it’s just a matter of figuring out where they store their most prized possessions. Where they hide the dirt that can bring this whole fucking façade crumbling down.

I wring my hands in front of me as Liam speaks about sin. The irony. The Church of the Rapture is corrupt from the inside out. Pedophilia, human trafficking, drugs… the list goes on. They are small but powerful, with a lot of wealthy people who write them checks every single week. I have to figure out their weaknesses and expose them. I know they exist. It’s what Oliver died trying to uncover.

But first, I have to get Liam to trust me wholly.

The sermon ends, and we all sing a few songs. It’s such a crock of shit, and I hate every word that comes out of my mouth. Finally, the service is over, and Liam meets my gaze, gesturing for me to follow him.

We make our way down the hallway to what I assume is his office. It’s generic and boring, clearly a front for something much more sinister. All of this seems like a front, to be honest. Even Liam. I watch him as he moves behind the desk, falling into his chair and sighing. Does anyone else know he prefers men? Does anyone really know him at all? Are they all hiding secrets? A shiver works down my spine when I think of what other people must be hiding. Greythorn has always had dark secrets of its own, and Church of the Rapture just plays into that.

These people are ruthless, their influence uncanny, and here I am, throwing myself right into the fighting pit.

“What’d you think?” Liam asks me with a studying stare, leaning back in his leather executive chair.

I don’t answer at first, instead opting to pace around his office and pretend to look at his religious paraphernalia. There’s a large cross behind him, and above it, a poster that says, Live, Pray, Hope. I train my mouth into a frown, disguising my amusement.

“It was interesting,” I answer slowly, turning to face him. “Look, I’m not a saint. I’ve done some shit, you know?”

Liam chuckles. “As long as you are one of us, the Lord will forgive.”

I bite the inside of my cheek. I know why Silas and Damon tasked me with this–why they asked me to go undercover. Silas couldn’t, because Liam would never believe him. And Damon can’t hide his feelings to save his life. He would’ve blown his cover during the first service.

But me?

I smile at Liam, narrowing my eyes.
