Chapter 12

After Melancton left her in the dark, Daphne spent several minutes fuming at the ceiling. The nerve of him. She'd said she would take a nap to make him go away, and then he'd turned the light off and shut her away like a dirty little secret. If she didn't love him so freaking much, she'd be marching out the door, limp or no limp, and leaving as soon as night fell.

She sat up and hobbled around until she reached the door and wrenched it open. No one in the hallway. The stairs loomed at the end of the corridor and she sighed. At least no one would have to witness her struggle to climb them.

Stepping out into the hall, she smoothed the dress over her legs. She wasn't wearing shoes, and the hardwood flooring was cold beneath her feet. She trudged to the staircase, placing her hands on the rails and slowly ascended them. When she reached the top, she smiled triumphantly and leaned forward to open the door.

It swung wide of its own accord.

Daphne's reflexes kicked in and she backed away, only to remember there was a step down. Her arms flailed. She felt herself tilt.

And then arms caught her and hugged her close. Glancing up, she found her savior wasn't Melancton, but Orestes.

"What are you trying to do?" He pulled her with him into the kitchen before he let her go. "Do you know how dead Melancton would kill me if he found out I knocked you down the stairs? We are talking dead on a scale of road kill and torture film. It would be so gruesome, even horror filmmakers would be scared to make a movie about it, and I don't want to die."

"Sorry."

"Why are you apologizing? I'm the one that tried to push you down the stairs." He started laughing.

Daphne couldn't help but smile. His distress had faded into humor, and it was contagious. Feeling more comfortable with him, she glanced around. A strangely appetizing aroma in the air caught her attention and her stomach let out a loud growl before it clenched tightly.

"Have you eaten?" Orestes asked, pulling out a chair and motioning for her to sit. "I brought a pizza back with me. I had to run an, er, errand for Vander and was out most of the day. Barely made it back with dinner. I was just heading down to see if anyone hadn't eaten yet."

"Pizza?" She asked. Those she had seen a lot of on Apollo's television. It smelled divine.

Orestes lit up like a candle. "Oh man. You've never had pizza, have you?" When she shook her head, he turned on his heels and started collecting plates and paper towels. "I'll admit it isn't the healthiest food option around, but it's delicious. I grabbed an all meat one, so there's pepperoni, ham, sausage, bacon, oh and extra cheese."

He served them both a large slice of pizza and glasses of sweet tea. Since her throat was dry, she went for the beverage first and nearly spat it out.
