The clerk consulted his records, found a reservation slip. "Right," he said. "Thirty-day charter. Cleared for sea on-board landings. Can 1 see your rating?"
The pudgy man spread out his credentials. The clerk whistled. "Mister," he said, "you're what they call over-qualified."
"Boredom," said Begley. "I kept taking the tests."
"Sign here," said the clerk. "The bUls are to be sent to North Atlantic Productions, Beverly Hills, right?"
"I guess so," said the pilot. "All I know is they told me I wouldn't have to pay cash."
"Not," chuckled the clerk, "unless you happen to have around twenty-five hundred bucks a day to plunk down."
"I do," said Begley. "But I won't."
"Oh," said the clerk. He stamped the rental agreement. "Do you want a check ride?"
"Why?"
The clerk considered for a moment and, smiling, said, "No reason, I guess. Have a good flight, Mr. Begley."
"Thanks," said the pilot. He stuffed the paperwork into his brain bag and, closing the well-worn briefcase, started for the helicopter.
The word reached the President's ears at three-twenty, Washington time.
"I see," he said calmly as Noah Henderson gave him the report. "Well, you did all you could."
"What now?"
"Nothing. We've stepped well over the line already. I'll have Lamprey put under observation, and if they find out anything, Til just have to appeal to Forsythe's conscience as a good citizen."
"I hope you won't take this wrong, Mr. President," said Henderson, "but I think that might have been the best thing to do in the very beginning."
"Mr. Henderson," said the President, "I have a sinking feeling in my stomach that you're right."
