Chapter Six

“So?” Sarah fired at William as soon as he stepped out of the interrogation room.

“Caswell says Drew is the one we’re looking for,” William said slowly.

“How does he know?”

“He says we’ll find out what we need to at his place. Have you gotten that warrant signed yet?”

“No.”

“Well, I suppose we better report to the captain.”

They walked out of the interrogation area and into Captain Hackett's office.

“Caswell says Drew is our guy,” William announced to the captain, who was knee-deep in paperwork behind his big brown desk.

He took a deep breath, leaned back in his revolving chair, and removed his glasses. “You trust him?” he asked, his gaze fixed on Sarah, but the question was aimed at William.

“I don’t trust him,” William responded, “but I think he’s telling the truth.”

“We’ll find out when we search his house.” Sarah chimed in.

Captain Hackett blinked at William, who blinked back.

“You two take care of this. Tomorrow, the press is going to be here again. And I’m already getting calls.”

“We’ll get this cleared as soon as possible, sir,” Sarah said.

She got an alert on her phone and went on to check her email.

It was a digitally signed warrant for Rick Caswell’s apartment search.

“Got the warrant,” she waved the phone. “Let’s go.”

“I’ll be right behind you.”

Sarah left, and William dialed a number.

Someone answered at once.

“Caswell’s place. Plant the file.”

He hung up, nodded stiffly at Captain Hackett, and walked out of the office.

Sarah was standing by the car when William stepped through the doors; the sun so bright he had to use his hand as a shield.

The day was still bright and cool. Birds flew nearby, and it was a peaceful, calm day. Yet Sarah did not care for that right now.

This case was not making sense to her, and it bothered her.

“Why did he only agree to speak to you?” Sarah asked William.

“This guy’s a misogynist. He probably just didn’t want to talk to you.”

“Oh,” Sarah muttered.

“Yeah.”

Sarah and William arrived at Rick Caswell’s apartment building. They found a few people gathered outside. They were drinking beer and screaming at some football match on display from a small television.

A little barbecue was grilling nearby, and the rebel flag was flying.

“It’s daytime. Shouldn’t they be at work?”

“Most of these people are losers,” William explained. “They got no work, no money. Why do you think they’re so bitter?”

The men looked at William and Sarah with hostility as they went into the building.

Just then, William’s phone rang.

“Yeah?”

“This is Detective Daniels. I’m with Dreston PD. Chief wanted us here to keep tabs on Caswell’s place. I am calling to report that I just saw two men who appear to be armed go into the apartment. Best be careful.”

William stopped in his tracks. “And they are still there, yes?” Detective Daniels affirmed. “Alright, thanks.”

Sarah thought for a moment after William filled her in on the new revelation from Detective Daniels.

“Alright, I’ll get the fire escape. You get the door.”

William ran to the door, and Sarah ran towards the fire escape.

She raced towards Rick Caswell’s apartment.
