Small village west of Tehran.

Marcus shifted, his spine pressing tightly into a column supporting the roof over their heads. The entire building was steel frame construction, walled with wood, a completely different type of building than the rest of the village, which followed more the typical Middle Eastern construction using stone and cement. Wood was pretty rare and expensive in this part of the world, after all.

His eyes blinked open as he struggled to see the room he was in, cloaked in a deep, pervasive darkness.

“Are you awake?” the voice was small and relatively young and Marcus blinked, looking over to try to get eyes on the person speaking. He didn’t have a typical Iranian accent, but had that same kind of cocky teenage boy “I know everything” tone that Marcus was used to from his own sons.

He closed his eyes again, picturing Scott and Keeler, trying to see them playing football in the backyard as Marilyn had described. He’d spent so much time deployed during their childhood, he found that he was having surprising issues putting the image together. There were several scattered pictures, he just couldn’t make them fit. He couldn’t make anything fit right now.

“Yeah,” he said softly. “I’m awake. Got a heck of a headache, but I’m awake.”

“Were you one of the ones who snuck up on the camp a few days ago?” the voice asked.

“One of the ones?” Marcus replied. “Far as I know, I was the only one. Didn’t work out real well.”

“Hey, you survived, right?”

Marcus nodded and pried his eyes open again; this time they were more accustomed to the dim lighting and he could make out the face of the other boy speaking with him. He was young, and had Chinese features, though his accent didn’t sound like he was from China. Plus, there was the whole speaking English fluently thing. He looked like the boy Marcus had seen and talked to when he first got thrown into this building, but he had passed out clean shortly after introducing himself. How long ago had that been? Hours?

“Who are you, kid?” Marcus asked, almost as if seeing him for the first time. “What are you doing here?”

The other boy looked around nervously. Marcus followed the tracks of his eyes and could see two others slumped on makeshift beds.

“My name is Chung,” he said quietly. “I’m an American citizen.”

“Say what?” Marcus asked. Suddenly this boy had his full attention. “How did you get out here?”

“Are you really with the United States Marines?” Chung asked, seemingly ignoring Marcus’s inquiry.

“Yeah, yeah I am. First Light Armored Recon Division. I was out here with my team on…” he drifted for a moment, his mind and voice trailing off into the events of the past week. “We were on an operation. But how about you answer my question before I answer too many more of yours.”

“Oh, right,” Chung said, his eyes darting down to look at the ground. Marcus narrowed his own glare. Something was bothering this kid.
