As Cassidy left Ty to handle Gail, she knew what she needed to do.

Officers, FBI agents, and Blackout members lingered outside the building. Some were working the scene. Others were here as backup.

She searched the group for Mac and pulled him aside. They stood close enough to the crowd to keep an eye on them but far enough away for privacy. Pine trees swayed above them, offering a surprisingly chilly shade considering the otherwise warm day.

Mac squinted as he turned to her. “What’s going on?”

Cassidy frowned—but only for a moment—before announcing, “I need you to take over as police chief.”

“What?” Shock coursed through his voice and surprise filled his gaze.

“Mac, I’m not in a position to deal with all this right now. The stakes are too personal, and I’m not going to make unbiased decisions.”

“Cassidy . . .” His voice sounded wistful and uncertain.

“This is what needs to be done right now.” Cassidy leaned closer before saying, “They took Annabeth.”

Mac’s eyes widened. “What? We need to organize teams and—”

“Whoever took her said if I told anyone else in law enforcement Annabeth would die. I can’t put her at risk like that. I know the statistics. I’ve been in these situations before—just not with a child under my care. But I just can’t take any chances right now.”

“So what are you going to do?”

“This person who took her said to wait for more instructions.”

“What about that dead body in the salt pond? Someone killed the real Blackout employee and came here as an imposter?”

“That’s my guess,” Cassidy said. “This guy either let somebody into the facility who was able to lure Annabeth out. Or that man snatched Annabeth himself and took her to the boat before coming back to work.”

“So when did this guy start here at the facilities?”

“Only three days ago,” Cassidy said. “Ty and Colton vetted him. Of course, they had no idea that the real Ronnie Baskins was dead, and this guy was put here in his place.”

Mac rubbed his jaw and stared into the distance a moment as if collecting his thoughts. “Whoever’s behind this has money and connections. He had to know this guy was coming to work here. Then he found someone who looked strangely similar to come in his place.”

“And did they do all this because of Annabeth? Was she the end goal? Or has this guy been doing other things around here at the Blackout facility?” Cassidy shook her head, wishing she had some answers. “And why did he risk coming back after assisting in Annabeth’s abduction?”

“Those are great questions.”

“My guys are checking it out now, making sure there are no more surprises,” Cassidy said. “I’ve got to find Annabeth. I know it’s my duty to look into these two deaths that occurred on the island today. But there’s no way I can give them my concentration. Not with Annabeth out there. That’s why I need you to temporarily take over.”

“Cassidy . . .” Mac shook his head. After a moment of what seemed like contemplation he finally nodded.
