Chapter 16
The ability to hear things going on around her slowly began to return as the burning feeling in Laceyâs head started to ease. The sound of someone whispering near her ear filled her head and she focused on the voice. It was Cole. He was talking to her about the night they became mates. She kept her eyes closed and listened as he spoke about how much he loved her. His woodsy masculine scent washed over her as the rest of her senses suddenly came back to life. She inhaled deeply and reveled in the smell of the man she adored, then she forced her eyes open.
As soon as her lids lifted, she was greeted with the most perfect image in the world...the man she loved staring down at her with a smile on his face. Cole was laying beside her with his head propped up in his hand. âHello, beautifulâ he whispered and kissed her cheek.
With the burning in her head almost completely gone, Lacey blinked several times before speaking, âCole?â
âIâm here, baby.â
She locked eyes with him as images of what Branson had done to her flashed in her mind, making her body shiver involuntarily. âIâm sorryâ she whispered in a pained voice. âIâm so sorry I left you.â
Cole took a moment to respond. He didnât want her to know that a small part of him was angry at her for leaving with Branson. Even though she did it for the right reasons and in all honesty, she didnât really have a choice, it still bothered him that instead of fighting sheâd left willingly. âShush...letâs not talk about that right nowâ he said and touched his hand to her cheek. âYou need to rest.â
Lacey shook her head and attempted to sit up only to be pushed back down by Coleâs strong hands. âIâm not tiredâ she said and gently pushed at his hands. âI want to see Claire and Cody. What about my dad? Is he okay?â She sat up and fought a wave of dizziness that made her body sway to the side.
Cole caught her shoulders to steady her. âAre you okay?â he asked with concern.
âMy head feels strange. It feels heavyâ Lacey responded and grabbed her head with her hands in an attempt to hold it straight.
âYou need to lay back downâ Cole said with authority and pulled her down to lay beside him on the bed.
She laid down and stared up at the ceiling of the cabin and repeated her earlier question. âWhere is Frank?â
âFrank is fine. Iâll send for him in a little while.â Cole brushed her hair back from her face as he stared into her eyes. He didnât like the distant, damaged look he saw in them. The energetic, full-of-life brightness they had always held was no longer there. Her eyes were now shadowed with sadness and pain.
âHow long was I gone?â Lacey asked.
âA little over twenty-four hoursâ Cole said and continued to study her face with deep concern.
Lacey turned over in
