Chapter 13

ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, Addison grabbed her phone from the nightstand in the hotel room, hoping Matt wasn’t texting her again. She’d told him last night that she’d be gone for a week, and he’d seemed somewhat miffed that she hadn’t given him much notice.

What did he care?

She’d been staying in her office building a few nights, so it’s not like he should’ve been surprised she wasn’t home. Had he even wondered where she was or noticed she wasn’t there before she’d texted him?

Addison smiled as she looked at her phone, realizing it was Ace. He’d texted her earlier to say good morning and let her know he had to go into work for at least some of the day. She didn’t know how often he worked on Sundays but assumed it depended on whatever missions he had coming up. He certainly didn’t have to touch base with her, and she’d loved that he’d been thinking about her first thing.

She’d laid in bed for an hour last night, remembering their kiss on the boat. It felt lonely in her hotel room, not that she was ready to sleep with Ace. Someday, though, she’d love to feel his muscular arms wrapped around her as she drifted off. After that kiss, she knew their chemistry would be crazy if things ever progressed further between them. Ace was confident and masculine, an appealing combination. She liked that he was big and muscular. She’d dated various guys in college and after, but none of them sent her heart racing the way that he did.

Ace had carried her suitcase up to her hotel room last night after he’d gotten her checked in and then kissed her softly at the door. It was completely different from the passionate kiss they’d shared on the boat. This one had been sweet. Gentle. Addison knew he was worried about her, and it made her glow with warmth knowing that he cared.

We finished up early. Want to come over for dinner?

A wave of pleasure washed over her. He was inviting her to his place? Ace had to leave early in the morning, so it’s not like he’d expect her to stay overnight. Not that she was ready for that. She doubted most men would turn down sex if given the chance, but he hadn’t pressured her into anything so far. He had to leave bright and early yet wanted to see her anyway.

That sounds great. Can I bring something?

Her phone buzzed with his reply.

Just yourself, sweetheart. I’m stopping by the store on my way home. See you at 1700?

5:00.

She laughed at his second text. Yep, she would’ve been counting on her fingers trying to calculate military time. She wasn’t familiar with it but knew Ace used it daily.

Sounds perfect. See you soon.

Setting her phone back down, she looked over at her suitcase. She didn’t have tons of clothes with her but had packed enough to last at least a week. If she’d known she’d be seeing Ace today, she might’ve made sure to bring something cute for a date.
