Chapter 9

Two weeks later, Rachel glanced around her quiet apartment. Kyle was dropping off Keira in a couple of hours, and she couldn’t wait for her daughter to come home. The judge had revised the visitation schedule, temporarily allowing Kyle two Saturdays a month. They’d agreed to wait until school was out to start overnight visits, but as of this summer, she’d have to let Keira go spend the night at his house every other week.

Rachel’s stomach twisted. She’d never even spent a single night away from her daughter. It would kill her to have to let her go to her dad’s. While divorced parents dealt with that all the time, she wasn’t divorced. He’d never been there for bedtime stories or scary dreams or tears in the middle of the night. Kyle had gotten her pregnant and then abandoned her.

How could a judge just grant someone like that time with a child?

In hindsight, she wished she’d never taken child support from Kyle. If she’d gotten him to relinquish his parental rights, she wouldn’t be in this situation. Money would’ve been tight perhaps, but she wouldn’t be dealing with sending her daughter off with a man who was essentially a stranger. He wasn’t exactly a deadbeat dad, given that he paid her on time every month, but geez. He certainly wasn’t an exemplary parent either.

Her phone buzzed with a text, and she jumped, startled out of her thoughts.

Keira is crying again. Can’t you tell her to behave when she’s with me?

Muttering under her breath, she texted Kyle back. Keira rarely cried at all with Rachel unless she was hurt. She was a happy child. While she’d seemed to adjust to spending one day a month with Kyle, now that their visits were growing more frequent, she’d been getting upset. Just this morning she’d asked if Tyler was back yet because she’d rather play with him. It broke Rachel’s heart. She quickly thumbed a response to Kyle.

She’s five. She doesn’t cry when she’s at home. What happened?

It wasn’t the first time he’d texted her today. She’d been mad they took her out to breakfast earlier because Rachel had already fed her, and she wasn’t hungry. Then she’d been upset they wouldn’t play soccer with her like Rachel and Tyler did. Lunch had involved some drama as well because she hadn’t liked whatever Carly had made.

Rachel’s phone began to vibrate again, and she swiped the screen to answer Kyle’s call.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Keira’s crying and wants to come home. Carly is upset now, too. Can’t Keira play by herself for a little while? Does she expect you to entertain her all day when she’s at your apartment?”

“Of course, she needs attention, Kyle,” Rachel said. “She’s a little kid.”

“I had that entire swing set installed in my backyard for her to play on, and she got bored of it after a few minutes. We’ve got a playroom full of toys.”

“She wants you to play with her. Talk to her. What were you doing?”

“Just trying to relax with a glass of wine.
