The age requirements are:

For PADI you must be a minimum of 10 years old to take their courses.

Students that are under 15 can do the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification. Once the student reaches 15 years old, the certification can be upgraded to their PADI Openwater Certificate.

For NAUI, you must be 12 or older to take the course.

In response to public demand, most dive companies have dropped their minimum age requirements to 10 for their junior certification.

The Junior PADI Scuba Diver certificates are available for 10-year-olds, and 8-year-olds are welcome to take part in the new Seal Team and Bubblemaker programs. These are very safe and have been developed to cater for the younger members of families who want to have a family dive holiday; they are held in a pool that has less than 6-foot depth of water.

For 8 to 12-year-olds, there is a pool-only “Ranger” program that is offered by SSI.

The normal dive course usually consists of 4 parts:

Book work

Written exams

Pool training

Open water dives
